Inside the SJCOE FabLab, SJCOE STEM Coordinator Stephen Callahan explained how the high-tech equipment that surrounded him was used to help students create proj...ects showing planetary motion. He pointed out the wooden gear, circuit board, and sphere representing the moon to a group of visitors at the FabLab on Thursday. He also explained how this project didn't just teach students technical skills, it was meant to help them practice solving problems. "It's more about students engineering solutions to the problem," he said. The SJCOE's STEM and engineering lab was one of the stops of SJCOE programs led by Dr. Troy Brown, County Superintendent of Schools, on Thursday with Janine Kaeslin, SJCOE associate superintendent of Student Programs and Services. The tour also included Christina Gilbert, director of the San Joaquin Children's Alliance ; Carrie Sass from Sass Communications, and from the Stockton campus of CSU, Stanislaus, Faimous Harrison, dean, and Anthony Johnson, program coordinator. Also on the tour was CodeStack, Teachers College of San Joaquin, and the Discovery ChalleNGe Academy (DCA). DCA is a joint venture with the California National Guard that gives students who might not graduate high school another change. One cadet told the visitors that he knew he had been on the wrong path. "It was either DCA or being on the streets for the rest of my life." He also shared that is GPA rose from a 0.2 to a 4.0 since becoming a cadet at DCA.
