Next up we have PGY-5 Dr. Maria O’Malley! She was kind enough to write up her own bio and it’s better than anything I could come up with: Hi all, my name Is Maria and I’m currently a 4th year resident looking forward to staying at Stanford for my IR fellowship starting next July. I was born in Portland Oregon and lived most of my life in a small suburb just over the Columbia River known as Vancouver (not B.C.!). During the 90s and early 2000s, the Portland Metro area was one... of the largest Russian-speaking immigrant communities in the US. I developed a keen interest in the Russian language and culture and fully immersed myself in our local Mini-Russia. This interest culminated in my work as a Russian medical interpreter before I set forth into the arctic tundra of Minnesota to attend medical school at the Mayo Clinic. Not long after starting medical school I met Mr. Wonderful, who was already living in the Bay Area, and we managed to maintain a long-distance relationship for four years until that wonderful day when I matched at Stanford Radiology. We now have a beautiful two-year old daughter, two mischievous mini-dachshunds, and are looking forward to meeting our second daughter in early December! I have a passion for using imaging in the active care of patients and love how even the smallest procedure can make a huge difference in how a critically ill patient feels. This year I’m pursuing a 6 month mini-fellowship in Breast Imaging, and am really enjoying honing both my diagnostic and procedural skills while working with patients again. If I ever have any spare time (which is rare), I enjoy hiking, keeping up with my Russian language skills, binge-watching period dramas, and I hope to take up horse-riding again after the baby arrives. #stanfordradiology @ Stanford Health Care

Chronic pain is one of the leading causes of healthcare expenditure in our country today and it has yet to be well addressed (ie opioid crisis). Enter the astounding research being done by our very own Dr. Sandip Biswal using PET MRI to localize and address sources of pain using a novel radiotracer. This image is from one of his many patients and is currently being considered for the AuntMinnie image of the year (https://bit.ly/2GroDol). If you have a Twitter, go to https://twitter.com/biswal_lab/status/1311916026792079361 and hit the like/retweet button and give him a follow. Trust me, when this becomes big in a few years, you can tell your friends and family you were in the know early on #painimaging #stanfordradiology #molecularimaging @ Stanford Health Care

Hello there! Up next from our resident family is Dr. Lola Oladini (realize I’ve been inconsistent in addressing our residents as Dr....sorry!), a PGY-3 resident in our IR/DR program (seriously, we don’t churn out exclusively IR here, I promise). Lola comes from Lagos, Nigeria and the south side of Chicago. After venturing to Washington University in St. Louis for her degree in psychology, Lola returned home for medical school at the University of Chicago and decided on IR. ...After what I can only imagine was one too many winters spent in the Midwest, Lola realized West Coast is Best Coast and we were fortunate enough to match her (side note: I remember Lola from her interview day and claim credit for recruiting her here)! Lola has been a huge part of our residency and helped start our procedural skills lab among numerous other projects. Besides being an awesome interventional radiologist, Lola also wants to incorporate healthcare in low resource areas and global health in her future career. In her free time, Lola loves to read (nonradiology) books and eat brunch while staying engaged with her community and doing functional fitness training (gotta stay fit to don the lead apron for a whole career ). We know Lola has a very bright future with us and beyond and we will be watching her career with great interest! #stanfordradiology #StealthStarWarsQuote @ Stanford Health Care See more

Our next featured Stanford Radiology family member is Gunner and his human, Lynne! Lynne is a PGY-4 IR/DR (I promise we have people that aren’t doing IR too) resident who serves as the second DR junior chief resident. Lynne grew up in Albuquerque, NM and competed nationally in gymnastics. Unfortunately, a Lisfranc injury ended her career. However, it didn’t stop her athletic endeavors as she was a varsity diver at Trinity University where she was a 4x conference champion. Aft...er getting her degree in neuroscience, Lynne did a year of research at UTSA before attending Boston University for medical school. She originally wanted to do plastic surgery but eventually decided to come over to the dark side (dimly lit, really; our rooms aren’t THAT dark) and fell in love with IR. We luckily matched Lynne and she has continued her excellence through her first few years here. In addition to serving as junior chief resident, Lynne has started a procedural skills lab, helps lead our peer learning sessions, organizes joint conferences between us and general surgery, conducts research in IR and helps mentor medical students interested in IR (@lynnemartin9 , how do you have any free time?!?). Lynne and her husband, Kevin, have a cat named Kiwi in addition to their dog, Gunner. In her free time (when?!?!?) Lynne likes to exercise, hike, go to the beach and dog park, garden (which she says makes her sound like an old lady haha), travel, have game nights, and spend time with family and friends. We are extremely fortunate to have Lynne in our program given all the improvements she has made and how great of a person and resident she is! We look forward to her promising career! #stanfordradiology @ Stanford Health Care See more

Next up on our featured resident roster is one of our junior chief residents (PGY4), Dr. Sarah Cheng (@5arah.c). From sunny Arcadia, CA, Sarah decided to venture to Vassar College in New York for undergrad. However the call of home and warmer weather brought her to UCSF for medical school and then fortunately to us at Stanford for residency. Sarah knew pretty early on she was destined for interventional radiology and hopes to realize her dreams through ESIR (as a grumpy fourt...h year, I have no idea how any of the different IR pathways work tbh). When she’s not crushing studies on call and performing chiefly duties, Sarah likes to curate playlists on Spotify, soak up the sunshine and Vitamin D (because let’s be honest, half of radiologists are probably somewhat Vit D deficient), and learn to cook. We look forward to all the great things Sarah will accomplish during her time here! #stanfordradiology See more
