Dr. Jill Helms will serve as the new Vice Chair of Diversity and Inclusion for Stanford Department of Surgery. [Dr. Helms] has been a very active member of the JEDI committee as well as the innovation committee. She has a long-standing passion for recruiting and mentoring young students into the STEM field with her STaRS Internship Program, said Department Chair Dr. Mary Hawn in her announcement. I know she will bring her passion and creativity to this role and lead our... efforts to continue to make Stanford Surgery a great place to belong to. Dr. Helms says her interest in DEI began decades ago when she saw a pipeline full of talented young women and people of color in my classes, yet years later, rarely saw them in positions of leadership. Dr. Helms founded the Science Technology and Reconstructive Surgery (STaRS) Internship program, a no-cost program specifically geared towards introducing under-represented minority students to biomedical research. I believe [DEI] is essential for our long-term success as a Department, as a School, and as an Institution, said Dr. Helms. I'm honored to play a part in this DEI initiative in Surgery, and I firmly believe that with the support of Chair Mary Hawn, our JEDI council, and the members of our department, our program will one day set a standard for advancing justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion within our Nation’s medical institutions.

Stanford Plastic Surgery has had a unique, longstanding partnership with ReSurge International, starting with Dr. Don Laub and continuing with Dr. James Chang. ReSurge works to expand reconstructive surgery in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) through a comprehensive combination of direct surgical care, education and training, and funding to improve long-term reconstructive surgery capacity. One of the pillars of their work abroad is the visiting educator program, i...n which a multidisciplinary group of surgeons and other providers travel abroad to provide hands-on training and education in topics based on needs identified by local surgeons. In a new study published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery this March, Dr. Anna Luan and Dr. James Chang collaborated with ReSurge partner surgeons in Vietnam to quantify the impact of the ReSurge visiting educator program. They found that, over the course of 5 years and 12 visiting educator trips to hospitals in Vietnam, local surgeons subsequently independently performed over 2,000 operations corresponding to topics covered during visiting educator trips, or a mean of 136 operations annually per surgeon. Within several years, the hospitals experienced an 81.5% increase in surgical volume of these procedures, which continues to increase over time. Importantly, the local providers can then provide further training to others, resulting in an exponential effect on capacity. "This study is important to demonstrate that the visiting educator trip model can be successful in expanding local reconstructive surgical capacity, and supports the continued funding of training programs in global surgery." Dr. Luan says. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35089267/

New Intern Spotlight! Kelsey Lipman, PGY-1 Dr. Lipman is from Naples, Florida, where her family has been for generations working in the farming industry.... Dr. Lipman went to Washington University in St. Lous for undergraduate to study biomedical engineering. During her summers, she interned at stem cell research biotech companies in California. Toward the end of her undergraduate experience, an Engineers Without Borders trip to Guatemala City piqued her interest in the clinical side of medicine and changed her career path. After falling in love with California, she then went to medical school at UCLA. During medical school, she focused early on plastic surgery research, specifically breast reconstruction in patients with prior radiation, predicting patient preference for scar treatments, and outcomes of distraction osteogenesis for maxillary hypoplasia. On why she chose plastic surgery, Dr. Lipman says "Plastic surgery is a problem-solving specialty. There are often multiple ways to approach a case, and the pre-operative planning process becomes a dynamic conversation. It requires an incredible amount of creativity and innovation, similar to engineering, with the addition of patient-care. I also love that most plastic surgery cases drastically improve quality of life and bring patients back after injuries, closer to their version of 'normal.' Starting residency, I am most excited about getting involved in microsurgical cases and learning the intricacies of microsurgical training." In her free time, Dr. Lipman trains her Australian Shepherd named Henley. Dr. Lipman says, "The Bay Area has tons of dog friendly hikes, so I am exploring the area as much as I can! I also love exploring the beaches of the Pacific coastline and trying all the incredible restaurants in San Francisco." Welcome to the farm and Stanford Plastic Surgery, Kelsey, we are so happy to have you! #residencyprogram #plasticsurgeryresidency #womeninmedicine

New Intern Spotlight! Ryan DeCoster, PGY-1 Dr. DeCoster is originally from Maryland but spent most of his childhood growing up in Kentucky. He received his undergraduate, M.D., and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Kentucky College of Medicine. ... He completed a Surgeon-Scientist post-doctoral fellowship through the National Cancer Institute under the mentorship of Henry Vasconez, MD, FACS, and Mark Evers, MD, FACS, where he investigated the molecular mechanisms of breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma. His current research interests are focused on modulating the mechanical properties of irradiated soft tissue in experimental models, and his work is currently funded by the Plastic Surgery Foundation. Dr. DeCoster is a peer reviewer for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery-Global Open, the Aesthetic Surgery Journal, and Annals of Plastic Surgery. Before college, he served six years on active duty in the U.S. Navy, which included deployments to Hurricane Katrina, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Iraq, Saudi Arabi, Turkey, France, Greece, and Bahrain. His interest in plastic and reconstructive surgery stems from the exposure he had to the surgical reconstruction of devastating war injuries during his time in the military. His long-term plans include academic plastic surgery and a clinical practice at the VA focusing on complex reconstruction of war-related injuries. Ryan is married to his lovely wife, Rachel, who is a nurse practitioner, and together they have two boys, Easton, and Darren. He loves to spend time with his family and enjoys hunting waterfowl and large North American wild game in his spare time. Ryan says, Without question, Stanford has the strongest plastic and reconstructive surgery training program in the world. If you want to change the world, this is the place you do it!

Intern Spotlight! Cara Black, PGY-1 Cara was raised in Bucks County, Pennsylvania and completed her undergraduate studies at Bard College where she majored in biology. After college, she joined Teach For America and taught for two years as a 12th grade physics teacher in the South Side of Chicago. Cara then attended medical school at Georgetown University in Washington, DC, where she continued to advocate for kids’ education and health on a national level... as a White House intern within the Obama Administration. During the clinical years of medical school, Cara realized her passion for surgery and was especially fascinated by free flap reconstruction. She therefore spent a dedicated year studying autologous breast reconstruction outcomes and lower extremity microsurgical techniques within the plastic surgery department at Georgetown. During her last year of medical school, Cara did an away rotation at Stanford and was attracted to the welcoming community and dedication to research and international volunteering. In her free time, she enjoys cooking, Barre workouts, hiking, kayaking, traveling, art museums, improv comedy, tea, and relaxing with family and friends. Her favorite vacation she went on was to Hallstatt, Austria. Cara is the oldest of four sisters, one of whom works in the wine industry in the nearby Napa Valley. Welcome to the farm, Cara! We are so excited to have you. #residencyprogram #plasticsurgeryresidency #womeninmedicine #plasticsurgery See more
