UPDATE Thank you all for your prayer and support for our brother, Fr. Roberto Saldivar, who six weeks ago contracted COVID and has been in the hospital for over... five weeks now. Fr. Roberto has been able to be off the ventilator for more extended periods each day. Today he has been off of it most of the day. When he is off the ventilator, he still receives some oxygen through the trachea opening. This is the area where we have seen the most improvement in the past week. His lungs are getting stronger. For this, we are most thankful to God. Unfortunately, we have not seen any improvement in his kidney function. Several factors have affected his kidneys: First, COVID is known to affect kidney function; secondly, Fr. Roberto had a bacterial infection in his lungs after he contracted COVID that extended to other organs; and third, some of the blood clots that they detected could have traveled to his kidneys and affected them. Today, his doctor told us that they believe Fr. Roberto will need dialysis for a very long time. He may need it for life. There are no significant changes or improvement in his brain function. Although the doctor believes there are times when it seems like he focuses on a person for a few moments, there are other times when he does not. Other than that, he cannot communicate, respond to stimuli, or interact. The neurologists convened have concluded that Fr. Roberto will most likely, from the medical perspective, live with permanent brain damage. Still, we may see a small improvement over time. Is Fr. Roberto in pain and unable to tell us? His doctors do not believe he is in pain. He is uncomfortable, for sure. Imagine having the tracheostomy, coughing, and frequently excreting phlegm. But they run tests every day and confirm he can withdraw from pain, and there is no evidence that he is in any kind of problem. Fr. Roberto continues to be cared for by the medical staff at Providence Portland Medical Center. We continue to ask God, our Father of Mercies, for a miracle through the intercession of Venerable Felix of Jesus Rougier. Please, continue to join us in prayer. ACTUALIZACION Gracias a todos por su oración y apoyo a nuestro hermano, el P. Roberto Saldivar, quien hace seis semanas contrajo COVID y lleva más de cinco semanas en el hospital. P. Roberto ha podido estar fuera del ventilador durante períodos más prolongados cada día. Cuando está desconectado del ventilador, todavía recibe oxígeno a través de la abertura en la tráquea. Ésta es el área donde hemos visto la mayor mejora en la última semana. Sus pulmones se están fortaleciendo. Por esto, estamos muy agradecidos con Dios. Desafortunadamente, no hemos visto ninguna mejora en su función renal. Varios factores han afectado sus riñones: Primero, se sabe que COVID afecta la función renal; en segundo lugar, el P. Roberto tuvo una infección bacteriana en sus pulmones luego de contraer COVID que se extendió a otros órganos; y tercero, algunos de los coágulos de sangre que detectaron podrían haber viajado a sus riñones y afectarlos. Hoy, su médico nos dijo que creen que el P. Roberto necesitará diálisis durante mucho tiempo. Puede que lo necesite de por vida. No hay cambios significativos o mejoras en su función cerebral. Aunque el médico cree que hay momentos en los que parece que se concentra en la persona por unos momentos, hay otros momentos en los que no lo hace. Aparte de eso, no se comunica, responde a estímulos o interactúa. Los neurólogos piensan que es probable que, desde la perspectiva médica, viva con un daño cerebral permanente. Aún así, podría ser ver una pequeña mejora con el tiempo. Sus médicos no creen que tenga dolor. Está incómodo, seguro. Imagínese tener la traqueotomía, toser y excretar flema con frecuencia, etc Pero realizan pruebas todos los días y confirman que evita dolor, y no hay evidencia de que tenga algún tipo de problema. El P. Roberto sigue siendo atendido por el personal médico del Providence Portland Medical Center. Nosotros y su familia, muchos laicos, religiosas y minutéis ordenados, seguimos pidiendo a Dios, nuestro Padre Misericordioso, un milagro por intercesión del Venerable Félix de Jesús Rougier.
