St Philip's Episcopal Church 12.11.2020

Greetings to all friends of St. Philip's Episcopal Church. We are posting to let you know that St. Philip's merged with Holy Family Episcopal Church in the fall of 2017. We are still located at 5039 Hyland Drive in San Jose. We hold Sunday services in English, Spanish, and a combined English and Tagalog service. In addition, we hold a monthly joint service that includes all the congregations. Please visit us at Holy Family Episcopal Church San Jose for up to date information on services and more. Be sure to visit us in person for Sunday services. All are welcome! This Facebook page will be discontinued in the coming months.

Good morning St. Philip’s This Sunday is Pentecost Sunday. There will be a special celebration of Pentecost at 11:00 am Sunday, June the 4th. This church service is a combined trilingual (English,Spanish,Tagalog) service with Holy family and St Philip’s. During the service we will be kicking off the bringing of the 2 parishes together, by giving Statements of Intention, to start the discussions and procedure to merge St. Philip’s and Holy Family. There will also be 2 representatives from the Diocese in attendance, to join in the celebration. After the service is over, the celebration will continue with a potluck Lunch. So bring your favorite dish to share with everyone.

The Diocese of El Camino Real, which St. Philips belongs to, has asked that it consider a merger with Holy Family Church. With regard to this important matter, Rev. Lucie Thomas of St. Philips is currently soliciting opinions from church members and the general public. Following is the text of her message: Dear Members and Friends of St. Philip’s: On Sunday, April 30th, after our joint 10:30 bilingual service, Brian Nordwick, Canon to the Ordinary, the Bishop’s right hand man..., met with those of us present to speak about future growth plans for St. Philip's. Prior to this Bishop Mary had met with Vestry leaders from our church and a similar group from Holy Family Church (formerly Holy Child and St. Joseph) to discuss bringing our two churches together here on the East Side of San Jose. On Sunday. April 23rd, Jesus Reyes met with Holy Family and spoke with them about what a process for our two churches to come together might look like and to take questions and answers. And this last Sunday Brian Nordwick came and did the same with those of us who were present. As you know St. Philip's membership has been growing very slowly. The Diocese has worked with us on several restoration plans, which have not produced much growth. A good Sunday's attendance is around 35 to 40 with 4 or 5 kids. If we get all the kids together on one Sunday there are only about 10. Holy Family has been renting space in a Methodist Church in Milpitas for many years and they average about 65 on Sunday. They also have more children, close to thirty, although not all their kids are present every Sunday either. At the end of Brian's presentation, and after many questions and discussion, most of us present were supportive of the possibilities of the idea. The same was true for the members of Holy Family. As you can imagine there are many details to consider, and it will take some time for us to work them all out. It looks like we can enter a conversation with Holy Family to envision moving forward together. For those not present last Sunday, you may contact me or members of the Vestry and the committee members who were present at the meeting on Sunday, John LeSchofs, Paul Denlinger, Guadalupe and Martin Hernandez, Maria Garcia, Maria Elena Reyes, and John Bower, as well as other members of St. Philip's who attended. You are also encouraged to come this Sunday, May 7th, to bring your questions and comments to help our Vestry members who will be meeting after coffee hour to make a formal decision to explore this with representatives from Holy Family. Let us pray for God's guidance as we enter into the esploration together. Blessings to each one of you, Rev. Lucie

On Saturday April 8, a special memorial service was held at St. Philips to honor Mary Evans-Rodriguez, a long-standing member who passed away in March. Her family, including her husband, in-laws, daughter and nieces, as well as St. Philips members and friends from the lives who Mary touched, all came together to remember her. A solo rendition of Amazing Grace was sung in her memory, followed by a food and drink provided by Mary's family, where attendants gathered together to tell stories and reminisce about Mary. We will miss her.
