St. Joseph the Worker Episcopal Church 31.10.2020

Once again the two churches of St. Joseph and Holy Child have been part of a miracle. Our two churches were asked to speak to El Camino Real's 2012 Diocesan Convention and describe the astonishing things that have been taking place since our two congregations decided "to step out of the boat" and follow where Jesus was calling us to go, even though that meant doing the apparently impossible and going to Him across the water. One by one, eight of us (four from each church) tol...d our story -- Jean, Paul, Marina, Justin, Cora, Shonna, and Ruth and I. By the end, many people in the audience were weeping. When we finished they leapt to their feet in a standing ovation. We didn't bow, of course. For people who are standing on the water, bowing would be quite out of the question. Going to our knees would been a more appropriate response. Instead we simply offered our prayers of gratitude to the One who has made and who continues to make it all possible. God is good! See more

Our new banner of unity -- beautiful, beautiful!

On Pentecost Sunday 2011, Holy Child and St. Joseph signed, together with Bishop Mary, a Covenent of Unity. On that day we traced as many of the hands of those who were there present as we could. Since then, others have also added their hands too. On October 26, 2012, a week before Convention (and while a Halloween party for the youth was taking place in the next room) many dedicated people from both churches gathered to sew those traced hands, which had been transfered onto cloth, into a gorgeous banner of unity.

WAY TO GO, GIO! There was a massive turnout for the 8th Annual Buddy Walk for the Silicon Valley Down Syndrome Network, and "Team Gio" from Holy Child and St. Joseph contributed much to those numbers, all in support of our beloved Gio. Adding to the fun was the BBQ and picnic afterwards, complete with birthday party's for Gio's two brother, Tommy, who is now 5, (yes, this time it really IS is birthday) and EJ, who turned 11.

Saturday, September 29 was the date of the World Series of the first Annual St. Joseph Burger Back-off. Four world renowned Chefs offered their gourmet preparations. The entire congregation of Holy Child formed the judges. The race was neck to neck. With ESPN's cameras rolling in the background, many judges had to go back for seconds and thirds to try to determine the winner. At last the ruling was handed over. It was . . . Bob by a nose. He was crowned this year's Burger Meister, the undisputed Burger champ. But even now his competitors are working on their receipts for next year. Will he hold onto his title? Only time will tell.

God is holding all of us in God's love. Our job is to hold all of each other in that love too.

Please visit the Facebook page of our covenant church of Holy Child Episcopal Church. A wonderful and loving Filipino congregation with the Rev. Ruth Casipit Paguio as pastor, St. Joseph shares the same facility with Holy Child. We do many activities together, have regular joint services, and hope eventually to merge into one church. Please check out their Facebook page and let them know if you like what you see.

God Speaks God speaks to each of us as he makes us, then walks with us silently out of the night.... These are the words we dimly hear: You, sent out beyond your recall, go to the limits of your longing. Embody me. Flare up like flame and make big shadows I can move in. Let everything happen to you: beauty and terror. Just keep going. No feeling is final. Don't let yourself lose me. Nearby is the country they call life. You will know it by its seriousness. Give me your hand. Rainer Maria Rilke, Book of Hours, trans. Barrows & Macy

Sunnyhills United Methodist Church, Holy Child Episcopal Church, and St. Joseph Episcopal Church all worked together to host a group of pilgrims overnight on Sunday Aug. 19, 2019. It was truly a group, ecumenical effort, with Sunnyhills sharing their space, Holy Child providing their wonderful food and hospitality and St. Joseph providing support and organization (and some food too.) What wonderful cooperation! As one of the pilgrims wrote about the event, it was for us all a...bout people. Some of us supported what they represented. Some did not. Some were not sure. None of that mattered. They needed food and shelter, and they were God's people. ALL people are God's People. As one wrote: It seemed like our visit to that Methodist/Episcopalian community was something that the different congregations there came together to support. Our faith and action was a little different than theirs, but several people clearly were intrigued and grateful for the reflections our activism. Pastor Ernie walked with us for the first leg in the morning too. Angie’s chicken adobo and their homemade Egg McMuffins kicked our morning off right. During the march today, we were on well-traveled streets almost the whole way. A few residential neighborhoods were mostly devoid of pedestrians, but other, busier areas had plenty of traffic (though still not a lot of walkers). We received many peace honks even though we didn’t bring a Honk For Peace sign; people just knew!

Here we are - two churches, one body in Christ. And this was only those that we could pull from their other activities long enough to pose.
