Chuck Yeager, the most famous test pilot of his generation, who was the first to break the sound barrier and, thanks to Tom Wolfe, came to personify the death-defying aviator who possessed the elusive yet unmistakable right stuff, died on Monday in Los Angeles. He was 97. His death, at a hospital, was announced on his official Twitter account and confirmed by John Nicoletti, a family friend. General Yeager came out of the West Virginia hills with only a high school educatio...n and with a drawl that left many a fellow pilot bewildered. The first time he went up in a plane, he was sick to his stomach. But he became a fighter ace in World War II, shooting down five German planes in a single day and 13 over all. In the decade that followed, he helped usher in the age of military jets and spaceflight. He flew more than 150 military aircraft, logging more than 10,000 hours in the air.
On the morning of December 7, 1941, very few American fighter pilots were able to get airborne to fight the Japanese attackers. Ken Taylor and George Schwartz were two of them. Second Lieutenants Kenneth Marlar Taylor and George S. Welch took two Curtiss-Wright P-40B Warhawk fighters from a remote airfield at Haleiwa, on the northwestern side of the island of Oahu, and against overwhelming odds, each shot down four enemy airplanes: Welch shot down three Aichi D3A Type 99 Val dive bombers and one Mitsubishi A6M2 Type 0 (Zero) fighter. Taylor also shot down four Japanese airplanes. During the War, Welch flew the Bell P-39 Airacobra and Lockheed P-38 Lightning on 348 combat missions. He had 16 confirmed aerial victories over Japanese airplanes and rose to the rank of Major.
Santa will be visiting from Hiller’s 747 (from a safe, social distance) this Saturday!
