One of the hardest things about this time has been how many grandparents and great grandparents aren’t able to travel to meet the new babies in their family. When the generations are finally able to be together, the moments are priceless. Let’s hope we never again take moments like this for granted, and that all of us can be with our loved ones soon.

We hosted a screening of this brilliant movie at Sprout SF in 2014 and want to remind you all of it today in honor of its Director and Producer, James Redford, who passed away last week at the age of 58. This movie helped inspire a reversal in the dangerous California law at its center. Years later, the city of San Francisco even banned the toxic flame retardant chemicals that the movie warns us about. The lasting effects of this movie show us how when consumers are educated ...and call for change, both with their wallets and with their voices, change is possible. "Toxic Hot Seat" is about the California Technical Bulletin 117., a 1975 law that mandated all upholstery fabrics sold in California needed to contain flame retardants. To streamline operations, furniture makers opted to use the fire-retardant chemicals in all polyurethane foam-based furniture sold in the U.S., not just those items intended for sale in California. Watch it this week and think about what changes you can make that will pressure manufacturers and lawmakers to do better. Watch the movie here: https://play.hbomax.com/.../urn:hbo:feature...

Today is Children’s Environmental Health Day! We are joining our fellow environmental health advocates to bring attention to the growing evidence of how the environment can negatively affect children’s health and development: 34% of all childhood illnesses are due to modifiable environmental factors. - World Health Organization 4 million households in the U.S. have children living in them who are being exposed to high levels of lead. Centers for Disease Control and Prev...ention 60% of acute respiratory infections in children worldwide are related to environmental conditions. NIEHS/EPA Children’s Environmental Health and Disease Prevention Research Centers Despite these alarming trends, the EPA in recent years has rolled back air and water protections and rewritten rules to weaken EPA’s ability to limit toxic chemicals. The current administration stopped funding most of the Children’s Environmental Health Research Centers that had conducted landmark research that led to policies that improved the quality of air, water, and, therefore, children’s health. Additionally, in its implementation of TSCA, the current administration has ignored evidence that certain chemicals damage children’s hearts (TCE) and brains (1-Bromopropane), and that children are at a higher risk of exposure to harmful chemicals by crawling on the floor or putting things in their mouths. Governor Newsom has just signed the Toxics-free Cosmetics law banning 24 chemicals from personal care and beauty products sold in California that are currently banned from cosmetics sold in the European Union but present in beauty and personal care products sold legally in the U.S. (As the fifth largest economy in the world, changing California laws on products affects the way those products are produced for the whole country, as companies will reformulate to meet the stricter demands in CA.) Though this is great news, be aware! This law goes into effect in 2025 so you still have to be cautious and read ingredient labels on the products you are buying today.

What is vinyl chloride? Vinyl chloride is a raw material, 95 percent of which is used in the production of polyvinyl chloride (PVC). PVC is a plastic with a wide array of consumer and industrial uses, such as water distribution systems, credit card production and numerous plastic products. Vinyl chloride can be inhaled or absorbed through the skin. Vinyl chloride can be found in measurable quantities near manufacturing and processing plants. It is also in hazardous waste site...s as well as landfills. Following leaks, spills or improper disposal, vinyl chloride can also be detected in groundwater. Traces of vinyl chloride can be found in products that are made using PVC. Vinyl chloride became classified as a human carcinogen after various studies demonstrated toxic effects in humans and animals. A study completed on retired teachers and administrators in California found breast cancer incidence to be linked with high levels of chemical exposure. Vinyl chloride was among these chemicals. Research completed on women who worked in the manufacturing of plastics found elevated risks of breast cancer to be associated with exposure to chemicals, including vinyl chloride. Mice, hamsters and rats developed mammary gland tumors after being exposed to varying levels of vinyl chloride beginning at a young age. They also experienced shorter life spans. Children may be more vulnerable to the cancer-causing effects of vinyl chloride. Source: @bcppartners --
