The Last Bookstore - We are so excited to reveal The Last Spookstore: A Horror Story Art Show this Saturday! And we're overwhelmed by the response. To accommodate all 2,300 of you the store will close at 5:30 pm on Saturday and reopen at 7:30 pm. We ask that you please line up at the 5th Street entrance, and please leave backpacks and bags at home. It's a party after all! Come costumed and ready to dance and explore the store to find all 31 pieces of art. We'll be wrist banding those 21+ at the door. The exit will be our Spring St doors. Find The Last Spookstore: A Horror Story Art Show map on our website (http://bit.do/spookstore). We'll have hard copies available at the door.

Downtown Development: A Rundown on 94 Projects - L.A. Downtown News BROADWAY ARTS TOWER: A 1928 structure at 529 S. Broadway has been transformed into a creative office hub. It opened in August following a two-year renovation led by a coalition of investors. The five-story building, the former Schulte United Department Store, has a total of 38,000 square feet. Although the ground floor has long housed retail vendors, the four upper levels have remained empty for more than fo...ur decades, according to project representative Joelle McTigue. The largest new tenant is Blankspaces, which provides 7,500 square feet of co-working tech space on the top floor. The renovation preserved much of the interior’s brick, marble and crown moldings, added restrooms on each floor, and transformed a central elevator shaft into a glass well to bring in natural light. Rents are $2.75 a square foot. At 529artstower.com. http://www.ladowntownnews.com//article_772339f2-3dd9-11e4-

Broadway Arts Tower in L.A. Downtown News "While the Historic Commercial Reuse guidelines have been around for less than year, Huizar and Treadway both hope to see more developers take a chance adapting older buildings. It’s about taking part in Broadway’s return, Treadway said. He thinks others will find inspiration from the transformation of the Schulte United building." http://www.ladowntownnews.com//article_6c6144d8-377f-11e4-

Curbed LA - Aug 19, 2014 The adaptive reuse ordinancewhich made it easier for developers to turn beautiful-but-underused Downtown buildings into apartment and condo buildingsis credited for the neighborhood's major revitalization over the past decade, so this past December the city realized it should finally do the same thing for commercial space, particularly on Broadway, where gorgeous historic buildings sit mostly unused above groundlevel. The Historic Commercial Reuse I...nitiative kicked off with a pilot program on the street and now it debuts its first transformation: the Broadway Arts Tower, "sister to the Spring Arts Tower," will be the first creative office tower to open on Broadway in more than 80 years come next month, according to a statement a statement from its developers. (The iconic Eastern Columbia was the last office tower to open on the stretch, back in 1930; it's now been converted to fancy housing.) The former Schulte United building on Broadway, between Fifth and Sixth Streets, was once a department store with a 125-seat cafeteria inside; now, the 1928 structure has ceilings up to 40 feet high and a glass "light tunnel" going through each floor. The five-story building's original "grand staircase with bronze inlays and brass handrails, brickwork, and hardwood floors" have all been saved and incorporated. Unfortunately, there aren't any leasing prices listed on the building's site yet. http://la.curbed.com//inside_broadways_first_historic_towe
