Today I would like to thank Ms. Baldeschwieler, one of my high school English teachers. She assigned Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man. In full confession, this is the only assigned novel I read from cover to cover in high school. At that time, late 80's, most of the rest were of the "traditional canon". Where I grew up on the west coast, this book was the first place I learned of Juneteenth. That there are so many learning about Juneteenth just now, and so many more stopping to acknowledge Juneteenth for the first time just now, speaks volumes.
