This week, researchers announced they had finally traced the origin of its giant sarsen stones to the West Woods, a forested area about 15 miles (24 km) away in the town of Marlborough. The army corp of engineers was halted this week by a peaceful protest of Kumeyaay tribal members. The Army Corp is in charge of the construction project to build #Trumps wall across Indigenous tribal lands they have inhabited for over 16,000+ years, since time immemorial. In modern day Arizona, ancient #saguaro cactus are being dug up and desecrated to build the wall. Section 3-908 of the Arizona Revised Statutes Annotated states it is "unlawful for a person to destroy, di...g up, mutilate, collect, cut, harvest or take any living safeguarded native plant." Such an act can result in a class 4 felony. On top of the ecological devastation, multiple tribal entities and bands of Indigenous people have had dynamite blasts and heavy equipment potentially touch or damage tribal burial grounds and sacred sites. The #TohonoOodham Nation, the #Kumeyaay are being directly affected by the federal government waiver of dozens of laws to expedite construction. The government is citing the 2019 National Emergency Declaration, aiming at curbing unauthorized immigration, while we are in a pandemic, and Mexico is now closing their borders on the USA. The irony is palpable. On July 5th, the Kumeyaay Nation rallyied for support outside the @SanDiegoCourthouse, 330 W. BROADWAY, SAN DIEGO, CA. The tribe was not consulted about the use of explosives, and demands the Army Corp of Engineers stop construction and the city of San Diego enforce laws to protect sacred land and cultural resources.
