Growing Together Project and Numi Foundation. Thanks to an anonymous donor interested in funding a project for low-income seniors in Oakland, 300 households are now receiving 10 pounds a week of farm fresh, organic produce. That’s 3,000 pounds every week!!! We are so happy when we are able to connect Spectrum clients to additional community resources. The FARMS to COMMUNITIES initiative has addressed food insecurity in Oakland during the pandemic while supporting local far...mers and communities by connecting them through food. Thanks to the generosity of a funder, farm fresh, organic produce is being purchased from local farmers and delivered to active seniors in Oakland at no cost to them. Sample product lists were distributed for indicating which items our seniors were most interested in receiving, thereby creating customized fresh produce based on their input, so as to reduce food waste. Consideration of in-season produce and cost analysis also help determine what goes into each box, each week. In addition to this free seniors program, the group is also hoping to serve some of the 1,600 low-income Oakland families they made free deliveries to, but they can only do that if new customers in Oakland sign up at $35/week for home deliveries of 15 pounds a week, a savings of about $15 off grocery store prices. We know that you have many options when it comes to your end-of-year giving. Why not choose Spectrum Community Services? We are using gifts - big and small - to help seniors and low-income families stay in their own homes through programs like Meals on Wheels and Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Energy Programs. https://spectrumcs.org/donate P.S. The CARES Act of 2020 (Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act), has created special incentives for caring people li...ke you to help nourish seniors while taking advantage of special tax benefits this year. This includes an above-the-line $300 charitable deduction, even if you don’t itemize. You may wish to talk with your tax professional, but Spectrum Community Services is recognized as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization by the IRS, meaning your contribution may be tax-deductible as provided by law.

VOLUNTEER WITH US! We are in critical need of volunteers in West Oakland and Alameda, Monday-Friday from 11am-1pm. As a volunteer, you will play a vital role in our mission to feed the need by delivering meals to high risk seniors, identifying potential seniors in need and helping them sign up for the program. During the outbreak of COVID-19, all of our sites have adapted to keep our seniors and our volunteers safe by moving to cold, seal-packed meals that are handed out or... delivered to minimize direct contact. Compassionate, devoted volunteers are the blood and bone of Spectrum’s Senior Meals Program. Under our program, people who volunteer their time and energy serve over 600 meals everyday across 15 sites in Alameda County. Please visit https://spectrumcs.org/volunteers to sign up online.

Spectrum Community Services, Inc. 10.10.2020

From PG&E: Many of us will continue to spend more time at home this fall. You may be able to save on heating and cooling costs, increase comfort and be eligible for rebates up to $120 with a smart thermostat when you also sign up for a Time-of-Use rate plan. Smart thermostats and a Time-of-Use rate plan can work together to lower energy bills and costs when you program your heating or cooling to run during times when energy demand and prices are lower.

Fall Prevention TIP #5: Find the perfect pair of shoes...and get TWO pairs! Wear non-skid, rubber-soled, low-heeled shoes, or lace-up shoes with non-skid soles that fully support your feet. AND buying a 2nd pair to wear in the house will help keep outside germs outside where they belong!... Exercising at home may make some folks think that they don’t have to worry about what is on their feet. Please wear proper footwear while exercising and moving around your home.

Spectrum Community Services, Inc. 06.06.2020

Fall Prevention TIP #4: Light up your living space! Keep your home brightly lit to avoid tripping on objects that are hard to see. Also: Place night lights in your bedroom, bathroom and hallways.... Place a lamp within reach of your bed for middle-of-the-night needs. Make clear paths to light switches that aren't near room entrances. Consider trading traditional switches for glow-in-the-dark or illuminated switches. Turn on the lights before going up or down stairs. Store flashlights in easy-to-find places in case of power outages.

Fall Prevention Tip #3: Install grab bars and handrails. These safety devices are crucial for going up and down stairs, getting on and off the toilet, and stepping in and out of the bathtub without injuring yourself. Gary Kaplan, DO, founder and medical director of the Kaplan Center for Integrative Medicine in McLean, Virginia, suggests installing grab bars by toilets and bathtubs and handrails in stairways and hallways. Have a handyman or family member help with this if necessary.

Spectrum Community Services, Inc. 13.12.2019

Fall Prevention Tip #2: Repair or remove tripping hazards at home. Sometimes home fixtures can contribute to falls, which can then lead to back pain and other injuries. Examine every room and hallway, looking for items such as loose carpet, slippery throw rugs, or wood floorboards that stick up. Then repair, remove, or replace those items for more effective fall prevention.

The Fire Weather Watch has been upgraded to a Red Flag Warning starting at 4 pm this afternoon for Monterey/San Benito and 11 pm elsewhere due to risk of dry lightning and new fire starts until 11 am. The heat is shaping up to possibly force another series of rolling blackouts late Monday as the state approaches its electrical grid capacity.

Spectrum Community Services, Inc. 03.06.2019

California’s power grid operators said Monday millions of the state’s utility customers are expected lose electrical power starting Monday afternoon and continuing Tuesday, as the Golden State struggles to supply power during a record heat wave. Blackouts could begin around 4 p.m. and continue through 10 p.m. and are expected to last between 1 to 2 hours, said Steve Berberich, CEO of the California Independent System Operator, which runs the state’s power grid. https://buff.ly/315YK5c

Thank you Julie Sumiki- State Farm Agent for your generous donation to Spectrum Community Services. Julie and her State Farm family were planning to participate in this year's Feed the Need event. The proceeds from Feed the Need help fund Spectrum's Senior Nutrition Programs. Even though the event may have been cancelled, the need remains. In fact, demand for both meal delivery and pick-up meals has increased dramatically during COVID-19. THANK YOU Julie Sumiki- State Farm Agent!!!!
