4/5/2020 Update: Important Information about Federal Stimulus Payments [Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act] -If you filed a tax return in 2018 or 2019, and received a refund via direct deposit, those payments are estimated to be made within the next 3 weeks -For those who filed a return but received a paper check for their refund, or owed taxes, or have closed the account last on with with the IRS, paper checks are estimated to be issued the week of May... 4 -If you have not yet filed your 2019 taxes and you are able to do so now, this will update your information in the IRS database and will help expedite any payment you are entitled to receive (see link below for tax filing resources) -Paper checks will be issued at a rate of about 5 million per week. Individuals with the lowest income, based on adjusted gross income, will receive their checks first. -It may take 20 weeks to disperse the stimulus payments. According to the legislation, the IRS has until the end of 2020 to issue payments -The Treasury Dept. is planning a web-based portal that will allow people to provide their banking information to the IRS online so that they can receive their payments immediately. This is estimated to take several weeks. -Social Security recipients will not have to file a tax return in order to receive a stimulus payment -If you do not have taxable income, or do not have enough taxable income to require you to file a tax return AND you do not receive Social Security, you will need to file a tax return this year in order to receive the stimulus payment. Example: low-income veterans who receive VA disability compensation but not Social Security. This is the only way the IRS will be able to determine whether you qualify for a stimulus check. If you do not file a 2019 return, you will likely not receive a stimulus check. Reference this website: https://home.treasury.gov Find free resources for filing taxes here:
