CAN & SHOULD MALAYSIA CAPITALIZE AS REENTRY LANDINGPORT ? HOW ? Due to its geographical location & lack of launchport, Malaysia can & should capitalize itself as LANDINGPORT, but how? A reentry vehicle that is expected to make a headline soon is Space Rider, the ESA (European Space Agency) mini shuttle. Space Rider will be launched from French Guiana aboard Vega launch vehicle & is planned to be landed at Santa Maria island of Azores Archipelago in the Atlantic belongs to Po...Continue reading

CAN SPACESHIPTWO LAND AT COMMERCIAL AIRPORTS ? No, because SpaceShipTwo of Virgin Galactic lacks the capability of power-landing to safely land at commercial airports. After reaching the apogee in its parabolic flight, SpaceShipTwo performs its reentry & glides unpowered to land at Spaceport America, which is not a commercial airport. The lack of propulsion specifically for landing or to assist its landing prevent SpaceShipTwo to safely land at commercial airports - The reas...on why Spaceport America is built: A dedicated spaceport for space tourism. Commercial airports cannot support the landing of such suborbital spaceplane to avoid any possible risk that will endanger conventional scheduled flight at the airports. For safety + commercial purposes & economic reasons, the scheduled flights cannot make way to provide a "landing window" to such suborbital spaceplane. Virgin Galactic, however has its own business plan that it had chosen to operate SpaceShipTwo, a suborbital spaceplane without power-landing capability that goes very well with Spaceport America, a dedicated spaceport for space tourism. Therefore an airport that wish to support the operation of SpaceShipTwo & its 1st stage carrier plane, WhiteKnightTwo or their variants cannot be a commercial airport, but a dedicated spaceport. Spaceport Italia in Italy, chosen by Virgin Galactic for the operation of SpaceShipTwo & WhiteKnightTwo is also a dedicated spaceport. However, a non-commercial airport whose business plan does not depend on scheduled flights may host the operation of SpaceShipTwo & WhiteKnightTwo. If not due to this safety & commercial restrictions, SpaceShipTwo & WhiteKhightTwo would have chosen to operate at Los Angeles Airport or Miami Airport. NOTE: Commercial airports are defined as airports that is operated commercially by hosting schedule flights at a frequency high enough to be commercially viable, typically once every few minutes or several every hour.

WHY SUBORBITAL SPACEPLANES & REENTRY VEHICLES NEED POWER-LANDING TO LAND AT AIRPORT WISHING TO BE SPACEPORT? Because without power-landing capability, suborbital spaceplanes & reentry vehicles CANNOT land at commercial airports. Suborbital spaceplanes & reentry vehicles without power-landing capability cannot abort their landing or delay to land once they are already executing reentry. If there is an emergency which require them do so, which such capability is a MUST requirem...ent for vehicles that wish to land at commercial airports, they are unable to perform such manouvre because they lack propulsion for landing. Commercial airports operate on the basis of scheduled flights where the more flights, the better. A successful commercial airport should operate take offs & landings continuously at least every few minutes. Therefore suborbital spaceplanes & reentry vehicles must be able to fit into the schedule because the scheduled commercial flights cannot provide them a "landing window" where & when the runway is to be left exclusively for the landing of the suborbital spaceplanes & reentry vehicles. These suborbital spaceplanes & reentry vehicles can only perform safe landing at a very low frequency "non-commercial" airport where there is such landing window. Unfortunately for space tourism this is not possible because such window will only be available during unattractive non-commercial hours between midnight & before sunrise. As for reentry vehicles, their "ETA" will depend on their missions which is totally unrelated with & cannot be depended on the availability of the landing window at the airport. Then there is the issue of "critical mass" where airports operating below the critical mass, that is the minimum number of flights is at loss. An airport that wish to become a spaceport that is to accommodate the landing of suborbital spaceplanes & reentry vehicles need to have very low critical mass & risk business failure because of very low frequency of commercial flight. What is the solution then? The solution is suborbital spaceplanes & reentry vehicles should be equipped with power-landing capability so that they can safely land at commercial airports. An example of such suborbital spaceplane concept designed for the space tourism industry is Ascender, which take off & land using a pair of turbofan engines @ https://bristolspaceplanes.com/projects/ascender/
