This lively 78-year-old woman presented with a complicated breast history. She has several breast reduction surgeries in the 1970s and a breast lift in 2015 all performed by different plastic surgeons. She was very unhappy with the results of her breast lift because of the scarring and the "pockets" of breast tissue left on the medial (closer to the midline) right breast. Then, in 2019 she was diagnosed with invasive left breast cancer and was treated with a lumpectomy and ad...juvant radiation therapy. She was not offered reconstructive surgery at the time of her lumpectomy. Afterward, she noticed that her right breast was significantly larger than her left breast and she had a severe left breast deformity that made it difficult to wear bathing suits and be intimate with her partner. She wanted to correct these deformities and make her breasts more symmetric so that she could resume her otherwise very active and healthy lifestyle. To achieve her goals, she had a reduction mammaplasty and scar revision on her right breast and fat grafting to her left breast. She had 160cc of fat harvested from her back and filtered with @puregraftllc and grafted to her left breast. In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month, we would like to share this breast reconstruction result with you. This patient is a 47-year-old female who developed cancer in her right breast. She decided to have bilateral mastectomies, which is the removal of the entire breast gland on both sides. Her nipples were preserved as part of her nipple-sparing mastectomy. To replace the breast gland volume, tissue from her abdomen was transplanted to her breasts. This is called a free ...flap, essentially a transplant from one part of the body to another. Her abdominal muscles were preserved so her free flap is known as a DIEP flap which stands for Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator flap. Not only did this restore her breast shape and volume, but it also gave her a flatter stomach!
