New Form I-9 Released At the end of January, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) released a new Form I-9. The form is dated 10/21/2019 and should be used immediately. Happy Monday! We are in the midst of TAX SEASON and we want to share important information about your W-2 and how it works. Question: What is a W-2 form? Answer: The IRS requires employers to report wage and salary information for employees on Form W-2. Your W-2 also reports the amount of federal, state and other taxes withheld from your paycheck. As an employee, the information on your W-2 is extremely important when preparing your tax return.... Question: Who needs to file a W-2? Answer: The IRS requires employers to report wage and salary information. Employers do that via Form W-2. Employers must send employees a W-2 by the end of January each year. Every employer that paid you at least $600 during the year has to send you a W-2. Question: What time frame does a W-2 cover? Answer: The fiscal dates that your W-2 covers are from 12/16/18 6/30/19 (13 pay periods) and 07/01/19 12/15/19 (11 pay periods) Question: When can I start filing my taxes? Answer: Tax Day 2020 is Wednesday, April 15. You can file your taxes once you receive your W-2 form from your employer, which must be filed and postmarked on or before January 31. If you file your tax return electronically, you should receive your refund within three weeks. Question: How do I file my taxes? 1. File your taxes manually by filling out a form called a 1040 according to instructions provided by the IRS. Mail the form to the IRS, along with any payments you owe. 2. Use a tax software program or the website of a service like TurboTax or H&R Block. The service will walk you through a series of questions about your income and potential deductions, fill out your 1040, and (if you so choose) file it electronically for you. 3. Get professional help from an accountant or tax preparer, who will work with you to maximize your refund and fill out your tax return on your behalf. Question: How long does it take to get my income tax return? Answer: The IRS does not release a calendar, but continues to issue guidance that most filers should receive their refund within 21 days. They also remind filers that many tax software programs allow you to submit your taxes before the start of tax season. Other Important Forms: Your 1095-A includes information about Marketplace plans anyone in your household had in 2019. It comes from the Marketplace, not the IRS. Keep your 1095-As with your important tax information. A 1099 tax form is a record that an entity or person not your employer gave or paid you money. Once you have filed your tax return, there are a few ways to check the status of your refund: You can use the IRS Where’s My Refund? tool (fastest option) Call the IRS at 800-829-1954
