Dear Friends of SOS, Moises Farias, a facilities engineering technology major in his final semester at the California State University Maritime Academy - Cal Maritime, and Stephanie Stubbs, his mentor from the Sonoma Valley Mentoring Alliance, visited the Springs Hall to donate food for our clients on Friday, and returned again today!. The Clif bars, snack packets, and other to-go items will be quickly claimed! We so appreciate you thinking of us in times like these.

Dear Friends of SOS, As always, none of what we do would be possible without our incredible volunteers. Last week, Sheana Davis and Ben Sessions of The Epicurean Connection invited their godson, Sebastian, to volunteer at the Springs Hall. At 19 years old, he is almost ready to begin his studies at Oxford University, but before shipping across the Atlantic, he rolled up his sleeves to help out in our community. Amazing!

Happy President's Day! In honor of #PresidentsDay and #BlackHistoryMonth, I’d like to share a quote from President Barack Obama this week. During a speech to the NAACP three years before he became President, he said, Change is never easy, but always possible. And it comes not from violence or militancy or the kind of politics that pits us against each other and plays on our worst fears; but from great discipline and organization, and from a strong message of hope. At SOS w...e always try to provide you with an honest outlook on what is happening in our community. The challenges facing the unhoused are complicated, difficult, and enduring. But we are committed to facing them, and to always sharing a message of hope. If last year - when we pivoted to feed and help more of our fellow Sonomans - was any indication of what a disciplined and organized community can do, we know that change is always possible. Former congresswoman Shirley Chisolm is often remembered as the first black woman elected to congress, and the first black woman to run for president of the United States. During her presidential campaign in 1972, she survived assassination attempts and was blocked from participating in televised debates, but, as her campaign slogan so succinctly expressed, she was Unbought and Unbossed. In her words, If they don’t give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair. This... spirit of fighting for what you believe in motivates us here at SOS to keep our seat at the table and to represent those who often have no voice. Congresswoman Chisolm said, I want history to remember me, not as the first black woman elected to congress but as a black woman who dared to be herself. I want to be remembered as a catalyst for change in America. Thank you, Congresswoman, for being the catalyst. We’ll do our best to bring the change. ------------------------ In each weekly email update, Katherine King always includes an inspiring quote that connects to the mission of what we do. This month, we will be sharing quotes from current and past leaders from the Black community in celebration of #BlackHistoryMonth #BlackHistory #BHM Click here to sign up for our weekly email list: bit.ly/sos-updates-FB Pictorial Parade / Getty Images
