KEY 113-ACRE PROPERTY ALONG THE GUALALA PROTECTED! Sonoma Land Trust is donating to Redwood Coast Land Conservancy’s (RCLC) purchase of the stunning Mill Bend property along the Gualala River, protecting 113 acres of coastal wetlands, estuary and uplands at the boundary between Sonoma and Mendocino counties. Along with protecting critical habitat for endangered Coho salmon, steelhead trout and other threatened and endangered species, this $2.4 million project also provides fo...r public access and recreational opportunities, including an extension of the California Coastal Trail. RCLC has been working to acquire Mill Bend since 2017. Sonoma Land Trust was pleased to contribute $150,000 from its Land Protection Fund, a special fund that helps us move quickly when strategic acquisition opportunities arise. Congratulations to RCLC and our coastal communities! Learn more here: https://www.rclc.org/mill-bend/ See more

"To be fair, I don't have any 'views on climate change' either. Just like I don't have any 'views' on gravity, the fact that the earth is round, photosynthesis nor evolution. But understanding and knowing their existence really makes life in the 21st century so much easier." -- Greta Thunberg. Smart kid.
Today, just something silly for #WildlifeWednesday. The world is serious enough, eh?
Our beloved and esteemed board chair Allison Sanford is one of the too many residents who lost their homes to the Glass Fire. Pictured here with her husband Patrick Emery, grandkids and dog Lola, she shares her family’s love for their ranch of 25 years and their intention to rebuild. Having watched the Land Trust’s properties that burned in 2017 and 2019 subsequently revive, she says, What gives me great hope is how nature comes back. A bright light for these times -- this week's landmark Executive Order from Governor Newsom, pointing towards a serious and growing commitment to tackling the extinction crisis and climate change. Nonprofits like Sonoma Land Trust will continue to be on the front lines of making this a reality.
Our executive director Eamon O'Byrne discusses the impacts of the Glass Fire on our lands. "Our community has been tested in unimaginable ways and, again and again, our character shows through." Read his message here.
Have you wondered if smoke and ash are detrimental to plants? Here's your answer.
It would make sense to think those burned areas might be safe from future wildfires, at least for some time. But can such areas actually develop some sort of immunity or resistance after a fire. In reality, experts say, it's not that simple. Excellent information about what we can all expect going forward and what we need to do to stay safer.
Our beautiful county is again afire -- this time from the east. Those who are in the evacuation zones or are at risk of being evacuated or losing property are being held closely in our thoughts. Mother Nature is giving us some clear messages and we are listening. Stay safe, everyone.
