Happy New Year !!! Thank goodness 2021 has arrived to save us from the horrid year that was 2020. This last year has brought a large quantity of hardship, frustration, and sorrow to our family, friends, and neighbors. We’ve been sick, quarantined, unemployed, and lost homes. The world threw just about every curveball at us and Sonoma County has endured. We sincerely hope that the new year brings healing to us all. May the sick recover, may our homes begin to be rebuilt, may ...we all return to work, may the division that our society has sustained be removed, and may life begin to return to normal. We wish all of Sonoma County the very best this upcoming year. Cheers.

Merry Christmas, Roseland. The Sonoma County DSA, R-Hoops, Variety - the Children's Charity of Northern California and Vintage 99 Label teamed up to put on the R-Hoops Toy Drive, the annual Christmas event benefiting underserved families in the Roseland area of Santa Rosa. The Toy Drive started earlier this month when Sonoma County residents stepped up and donated a massive quantity of toys for us to give away to these wonderful kids who participate in the R-Hoops program. ... Normally, the R-Hoops volunteers and DSA members play Santa Claus and deliver the presents to homes around the city. Unfortunately, the Covid Grinch threw some coal in our stocking this year. We operated a giveaway site with social distancing, face masks, and PPE protocols all in place. The families came to us in small groups at pre-arranged time slots to help us control the amount of people there at any given time. Safety first, Christmas fun a very close second. When it was all said and done, we packed up the truck with remaining toys to be distributed to Boys and Girls Clubs by Variety. Variety has been an amazing partner over the last couple years, bringing a large donation to us when we were short one year and distributing the surplus toys when we’ve had more to share. The Sonoma County DSA is proud to sponsor the R-Hoops Program, which is run by retired Deputy Sheriff and active DSA member Frank Cooper. Frank has a lifelong relationship with the Roseland Community and many of our long tenured members have fond memories of working within Roseland. Christmas is a time for giving and there is no better sight to see than when a little ones eyes light up with joy when they receive their presents. The Sonoma County DSA wishes all of Sonoma County a very Merry Christmas.

Sonoma County, you all stepped up big time this year. The Sonoma Sheriff Office ran a Pack the Patrol Car event to benefit many local children through a variety of charities, including R-Hoops Scdsa, which has been run by one of our retired members for a couple decades now. There’s going to be a lot of underserved and at-risk kids getting Christmas presents this year, thanks to the kindness and generosity of our friends, family, and neighbors here in Sonoma County. The Sono...ma County DSA has been, and always will be, proud to support the R-Hoops Program here in Santa Rosa. Merry Christmas, Sonoma County.

The Sonoma County DSA was honored to spend Thanksgiving working with Sonoma Sheriff and International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 551 to give away Thanksgiving Dinners to several organizations here in Sonoma County that serve our neighbors in need. We all served a variety of people including disabled veterans, at risk youth, and the Latino community though organizations such as Social Advocates for Youth - SAY and the SRJC Next Up / Bear Cub Scholars program. Thanksgiving is a time for reflection and giving back. Thank you IBEW Local 551 for funding this amazing event and to all the service providers caring for our underserved community. Happy Thanksgiving, Sonoma County.

Nice job by some of our Deputies assigned to the Windsor Police Department taking some chronic thieves out of commission. It’s a shame that California refuses to take property crime seriously. A lot of hardworking people pay the price for the lack of consequences facing California’s criminals. https://www.facebook.com/486130488078196/posts/3866333900057821/?d=n

The Sonoma County Deputy Sheriff’s Association generally prefers to stay out of politics and focuses on supporting our membership of sworn peace officers and supporting the wonderful community of Sonoma County that we all call home. Unfortunately, we no longer have the luxury of political non-participation and we must take a stance against an illegal and flawed local measure, Measure P. Measure P is erroneously being advertised by its authors and supporters as civilian overs...Continue reading

Every day across this country, Peace Officers do incredible things for their fellow human-beings. Today we honor one of those officers, Lodi CA Police Officer Erika Urrea. On 08/12/2020 at around 844 AM, Officer Urrea was in the area of Lodi Ave and the railroad tracks when she saw a male in a wheelchair who appeared to be stuck on the tracks. She noticed that the railroad crossing arms started to come down and saw that a train was approaching. She immediately exited her pat...rol vehicle and began running towards the male. As the train was reaching them, she was able to pull the male out of the wheelchair and they both fell back onto the ground. The male suffered a leg injury that was tended to immediately by Officer Delgado (who had arrived to assist) and Officer Urrea. The 66-year-old male was ultimately transported to a local hospital for medical treatment. Like so many officers around this country have done before, Officer Urrea risked her own life to save another and her actions prevented a tragedy today. We are extremely proud of Officer Erika Urrea and her heroism. Thank you to all the amazing peace officers across this great nation for your dedication to duty and your fellow Americans. Much Respect, Deputy Mike Vail President - Sonoma County Deputy Sheriffs' Assn. https://youtu.be/rOV4j5n_TRU

Serious Warning to Californians - DANGEROUS TRAFFIC CONDITIONS DURING POWER SHUTOFFS! Greetings Everyone, By now you should all be aware that PG&E is planning to shut off power in several locations in California. When the power is shut off, traffic signals and streetlights no longer work. When these lights stop working during the day, traffic conditions are bad enough. During darkness, the conditions created by these shutoffs are exponentially worse. ... During total darkness, it is nearly impossible for people to see intersections, parked cars, pedestrians and bicycles crossing or riding in the street. PLEASE SLOW DOWN!!! During power shutoffs, it is VERY likely that other drivers will simply pass right through many intersections without even knowing they did so until they pass through. Now more than ever, you need to not only drive safely, but also expect that people will be running through intersections without stopping. Protect yourself accordingly. Having driven under these conditions myself, I can tell you first-hand that the dangers are very real and anyone driving during total darkness should remember the following: * ONLY DRIVE IF ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY! * TREAT ALL CONTROLLED INTERSECTIONS THAT HAVE NO POWER AS A 4-WAY STOP! Cities have nowhere near enough stop signs or personnel to mark all the affected intersections during power shutoffs, so keep your eyes peeled! * If you absolutely must drive, SLOW DOWN! SLOW DOWN! SLOW DOWN! Oh and yea, SLOW DOWN! * Keep your eyes on the road and watch all your surroundings. Hazards are everywhere! * STAY OFF YOUR PHONE! Looking away from the road for even a second can be a fatal decision and looking at the bright screen of your phone will minimize your night vision for several minutes each time you do it. * Minimize the lighting inside your car. Turn down your lights so your eyes stay adjusted to the darkness for the best possible night vision. Avoid looking at the headlights of other vehicles to help this as well. * Avoid using your high-beams unless absolutely necessary. Blinding passing drivers with your high-beams, especially in total darkness makes driving incredibly dangerous for them. Take care and please drive safely everyone! Deputy Mike Vail - President Sonoma County DSA
