Arson arrest in Rio Nido this morning. Just before 9 a.m. this morning, a driver called 911 for a possible arson at River Road near Canyon 2 Road in Rio Nido. The first deputy arrived at the scene three minutes after being dispatched. CalFire, Sonoma County Fire District, and Monte Rio Fire District responded and a full response for a vegetation fire was ordered. The caller gave a description of the suspect and gave his location to dispatchers so deputies could easily find hi...m. The suspect was later identified as Todd Bowman, 28, transient. The fire started under a bridge at a former homeless encampment. Earlier this week, deputies made everyone in the encampment leave, including Bowman, because the camp was within the high water mark of a waterway, which is a misdemeanor. Deputies contacted Bowman several hundred yards away from the fire, covered in soot, and detained him. After speaking with Bowman, deputies determined he started the fire. Bowman was arrested for felony arson and a misdemeanor charge of putting pollutants near a waterway. He is in custody at the Sonoma County jail and being held on $10,000 bail. We’ve been hearing a lot of concerns from west county residents about some homeless individuals starting fires during fire season. We will continue to do everything we can to keep our community safe. We appreciate the astute community member calling 911 and continuing to provide good information to help us find the suspect, and the firefighters responding quickly to put out the fire.

(Overheard near the copy machine last night) So there I was minding my own business when all of a sudden I saw a car and it was all Eeerrrttt!! I was like Whoa?! So I did my thing and stopped the car. I walked up to the driver and said, "What up?" And he said, "Nothin." So I said, "Probation?" And he and the passenger both said, "Yee." I asked dispatch and they were like, "Yup." ... So we got them out and did a little search here and a little search there and Bam!!! Would you believe I found a loaded gun under the passenger seat?! I asked them and they were like, "What!?" And I said ,"Mmm Hmmmm." So check this....I gave them a ride to jail. And that's how I made the streets of Santa Rosa safer. Booyah Sonoma County......booyah. Anthony Sotelo-Nelson, 31 and John Allen Jr, 34 of Santa Rosa were the involved. The passenger Allen not only was also on Felony probation for possession of firearms, but had Felony warrants for that said probation. They were both booked for being in possession of a loaded firearm. Allen was booked for the additional charges of being a felon in possession of the firearm, ammunition and the felony warrants.
