~ Three Sisters Garden ~ The 3-sisters method has its origins with Native American tribes such as the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois), Diné (Navajo), Hopi, & Zuni. There are various different designs traditionally used which are adaptations to the landscape for best water & space consideration. Corn, beans, & squash are the three sisters which are grown as partner plants because of their complementary nutrient requirements. The corn acts as a pole for the beans to climb and the sq...uash acts as a ground cover to shade and hold moisture. These crops also create a complimentary diet which can be dried and used year-round. A 4th sister sometimes planted is a pollinator plant such as sunflowers, tobacco, echinacea, or amaranth. Indigenous design recognizes & works with nature’s intelligence. Below is a fantastic resource for learning about the 3-sisters design & for purchasing good seed. Come see our 3-sisters beds at Solano Canyon Community Garden! Repost from Cristina Valverde

Gardening Tips Natural Pest Control - Attracting Beneficial Insects As gardeners, we inherently partner with other lifeforms to our mutual benefit. One of the ways we can extend this partnership is by growing plants that attract beneficial insects to our garden plots. The advantages of beneficial insects are many - not only do they provide us with pollination and non-chemical pest and disease control, but they increase the biodiversity and overall health of our garden ecosyst...em. Consider trying some of the beneficial plants you can find at this link here: Organic Pest Control: The Best Plants to Attract Beneficial Insects and Bees. If you are struggling with an unknown or difficult pest, other gardeners are a great resource, but the University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources Integrated Pest Management Program also has a catalogue of common pests in California and has suggestions for control. Keep in mind that any method of pest control used at the garden must be consistent with SCCG rules, which prohibit the use of pesticides, insecticides or herbicides without approval from the Garden Leadership team. https://ucanr.edu/blogs/blogcore/postdetail.cfm See more
