On this Winter Solstice, we thought we’d share this poem by Lynn Ungar. Pandemic What if you thought of it... as the Jews consider the Sabbath the most sacred of times? Cease from travel. Cease from buying and selling. Give up, just for now, on trying to make the world different than it is. Sing. Pray. Touch only those to whom you commit your life. Center down. And when your body has become still, reach out with your heart. Know that we are connected in ways that are terrifying and beautiful. (You could hardly deny it now.) Know that our lives are in one another’s hands. (Surely, that has come clear.) Do not reach out your hands. Reach out your heart. Reach out your words. Reach out all the tendrils of compassion that move, invisibly, where we cannot touch. Promise this world your love for better or for worse, in sickness and in health, so long as we all shall live. #wintersolstice #wintersolstice2020 See more

B C- Y L S K U G Everything was different at the farm this year. As we approached Soil Born Farms 20th birthday, we were looking forward to hosting the best Autumn Equinox Celebration ever. It takes months to coordinate this event. In early spring we moved forward with preliminary plans. We optimistically brainstormed how to safely host our annual fundraiser until it became clear it was not to be this year. We missed welcoming the commun...ity of friends that have loved and supported Soil Born Farms over the past 20 years and connecting with the amazing restaurants, chefs, bakers, wineries, breweries, and local food producers who have made this event a magical evening under the stars. We felt the beauty and magic of this community gathering, a beloved farm-to-fork tradition, would not translate well as a virtual event. The decision to cancel our 18th Annual Fundraiser Autumn Equinox Celebration was difficult in many ways. It makes our fundraising effort between now and the end of the year quite a feat. Our team has pulled together with determination and a commitment to overcome the financial challenges facing our nonprofit organization due to the pandemic. As you can imagine, the loss of income-generating activities (classes, events, field trips, summer camps, rentals) is devastating. This is how we raise the essential funds each year to close the gap between what SBF receives in donations and grants and the total funds that we need to provide for our dedicated staff, serve the community and advance our mission. If ever there was a time to support local nonprofits that mean something to you, it’s now. We invite you, our friends of the farm, to donate what you would have spent on your tickets to this magical evening. We know many of you are struggling too. But, if you are able and Soil Born is special to you, please consider giving what you can to help us continue our work in these trying times. https://soilborn.org/support-us/donate/ #givewhereyoulive #community #nonprofit #hopeinuncertaintimes Photo credit: Rebecca Le See more

W s s ... Since the beginning of our project 20 years ago, one of our original inspirations and convictions was the belief that time in the garden and in nature is as close to a cure-all as just about anything out there. Mind, body and spirit are healed and nourished by the act of interacting with the natural world, committing energy to feeding oneself and learning how to do this in a way that protects the earth instead of harmin...g it. For the last seven months, we’ve been hard at work growing food, envisioning the future and the stewardship of the American River Ranch. We are focused on making improvements to this place so that it can better welcome, inspire and teach. Visitors will soon be able to experience deepened skills-building opportunities in a variety of outdoor classroom spaces including our youth and family garden, sustainability square, an adult training garden, an herbal studies classroom and a completely reimagined greenhouse and garden shop. Even while we work through these challenging times, funds from the State and City of Rancho Cordova have been committed to make necessary improvements to the farm entrance. Soon construction will begin on a two-way entrance road and paved parking lot with native landscaping to replace our current dusty dirt lot. Designs for our future farmstand and commercial kitchen building are nearly complete and conceptual designs for a new animal barn are currently underway. We are also working on a plan to develop a comprehensive natural resource management plan at the ranch in an effort to better balance and steward interrelated activities of creek habitat, irrigation pasture for grazing animals, annual food production, perennial orchard trees, native plant and animal habitat and soil building. We cannot wait to see all of you, welcome you back and help inspire all of you to experience the magic and healing power of the garden and natural world. #getinnature #inspriation #healthandwellbeing Photo: Rebecca Le See more
