The hardest thing about creating the GPS Scale was figuring out what core elements to focus on when observing children. We knew we had to keep this list fairly short for our related GPS Observation Checklist to be readily used by many. Through our research, we decided that six core areas were at the heart of children’s interactive play: https://bit.ly/3kyd9OV

This semester, I decided to use the IKEA effect as a teacher. The result? One student remarked: Especially in a virtual class environment, I think it helps students feel more engaged with the class and connected to one another. Another said, When I have to teach or use the material in a creative way, it helps me absorb the information better, adding that passing the mic to as many students as possible would naturally increase the psychological safety of everyone in the class, which might encourage more students to speak up in class who normally wouldn’t. https://characterlab.org/tips-o/harnessing-the-ikea-effect/ Thaks Character Lab

Culturally inclusive Social skill activities for Día de los Muertos from @slp.meets.psyd! 1) identifying thoughts and feelings while watching clips of Coco - 9:40 and 1:33:42 in the movie are great ones! @pixarcoco 2) same but different - other than the obvious trick or treating vs ofrendas, another difference that especially striking is the fear/ghost/trickery theme of Halloween versus the happiness/family/traditions of Día de los Muertos (a good opportunity to talk about o...bserving facial expressions!) from https://efpractice.com 3) Social Behavior Mapping: what are the expected behaviors for celebrating Día de los Muertos from Social Thinking https://bit.ly/3jsurM7 4) Many communities have local celebrations of Día de los Muertos- find a YouTube clip and be a social detective observing a community event. An example in SF Bay Area would be at Garfield Park or Olvera street in Los Ángeles. 5) self reflection about joining a celebration: once you know the expected behaviors, you can think about whether you feel comfortable engaging in these expected behaviors and joining by a Día de los Muertos celebration. How well an individual performs on a standardized test in no way proves or disproves the presence of a social learning and/or social thinking challenge! Our tests just aren't that sensitive, nor are social abilities that clear cut. Across the fields of psychology, education, and speech and language, IQ and other standardized tests are usually inadequate for assessing the depth and complexity of a social learning disability. This is because traditional standardized tests don't tackle the complexity of what happens in real time social interactions and social problem solving

Three essential actions for helping students with social learning challenges. Nowadays, the demands on mainstream classroom teachers, and what they are expected to accomplish within the classroom, have reached the point of absurdity. We acknowledge this and want to help. No matter how accomplished, teachers cannot support and foster social learning in students with social emotional learning challenges successfully without the help and support of special education professionals, specialists, and parents https://bit.ly/2HlDyAU
