Santa Monica School Board Members Receives Environmental Leadership Award MALIBU, Calif., May 20, 2016 -- Longtime Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District (SMMUSD) board member and Pico Youth & Family Center CEO Oscar de la Torre was honored with the Champion of Children Award by America Unites for Kids, a Malibu-based environmental justice nonprofit organization, this evening. In her remarks during the awards gala at the Malibu Jewish Center & Synagogue, America Unites... for Kids founder and president Jennifer Blue DeNicola noted that de la Torre was selected for standing with students and parents in opposition to his own school district for not removing toxic PCBs, or polychlorinated biphenyls (a class of man-made chemicals), from school facilities. This crowd knows Oscar is one of us, added America Unites for Kids spokesperson Cindy Crawford from the awards stage. After several years of protesting against SMMUSD to remove PCBs from school facilities, America Unites for Kids issued a federal lawsuit in 2015 to force the school district to remove cancer-causing toxins for its schools. We’re not just making change in our own school district (here) in Santa Monica and Malibu, but also, we’re setting a precedent for the nation, said de la Torre in his acceptance speech. Instead of choosing profits, I’m choosing people. Also honored, Malibu-area congressman, Rep. Ted Lieu (CA-33), for championing environmental justice as a member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, as well as Flint, Michigan mom and clean water activist Leanne Walters.
