Today my son graduated after two years in the program!! When we saw Dr. Randhawa for the first time three+ years ago at Millers Children’s Hospital, my son was just released from CHOC after a week-long hospital stay. He was severely underweight, his lungs were functioning at less than 40%, and we lived in and out of the hospital and emergency room with no answers. "Amazing day today! My 9-year-old son, Jake, cleared 75 peanuts and is officially in remission! It has not been an easy road for us, but one that was definitely worth taking. When my son began this program 2 years ago, he was severely anaphylactic to soy, peanuts, and tree nuts. When Dr. Randhawa explained the program to us, we were hopeful, but also nervous about whether our sweet boy with autism would be able to handle all that was required of him. But we knew we had to t...ry - we had to do whatever we could to keep our son safe. My son had been bullied at school when he was 6 years old by another child who chased him on the playground with peanut butter on his hands, knowing that my son would have a reaction. That kid just didn’t know any better, but the result could have been devastating. A few months later, his first-grade teacher, who knew about his allergy, mistakenly gave him a Reese’s miniature peanut butter cup during a school party that was wrapped in red foil - you could not tell by looking at it that it had peanuts in the middle of it. Luckily, we had drilled it into Jake not to eat anything anyone gives him unless he checks with my husband or me first. But we had to ask ourselves - would we be so lucky the next time? My family and I are incredibly grateful to Dr. Randhawa and his staff who always went above and beyond to help us during this amazing journey.
