Lots of fun playing in a friendly mini-tournament this weekend. The final match was a battle between teams from Northern and Southern California, with the North having some really great professional players. Not to make excuses, but we were missing several key players, including Tone, Izz, Tavarez, and Mateo (Mateo made a very short appearance on Sunday, but was still on injury reserve), so we struggled offensively, plus Torres was not at 100%, but we did what we could unde...r the circumstances and had a lot of fun along the way. Tonight, the team wished Justin Ricketts the best of luck as he heads north to attend and play for a top tier Division II collegiate soccer team. Although he will be coming back to play for us next summer, we will still miss him here in the Oceanside area. Justin is an incredible athlete and a "high impact" player. He is so strong and is capable of unbelievable speed on the sand. He started with SoCal Legacy in 2017, just about 4 months after we had returned from Clearwate...r Beach, Florida following our second consecutive victory at the Major Beach Soccer National Championships. From his first day he has always demonstrated a high level of commitment and determination. He most definitely is a team player. His first tournament with Legacy was a Copa Cabana event held at Port Hueneme in 2017. He made some incredible goals and served up a perfect set to Israel Ramirez for a beautiful bicycle kick goal. He then played an instrumental role in leading Legacy to the first of 3 consecutive titles at The Beach Soccer Championships, in our home town of Oceanside, then we moved onward to Virginia Beach at the North American Sand Soccer Championships (NASSC) where Justin, again, made a major impact helping us win the U16 Surf Division Championship (the highest of four competitive levels offered by NASSC). He has played a large part in our dominance at Oceanside and was chosen to represent the USA at the Madjer International Youth Cup in Portugal in both 2018 and 2019. Justin is just as accomplished off the field, as he has always been one of our top performers in fundraising for the club and is a great example for sportsmanship and treating everyone around him with respect. He is an incredible individual, and we will miss him, but look forward to his return next beach season! SoCal Beach Soccer Club has always attracted exceptionally talented teams and gifted athletes from North San Diego County and, without exception, its U20 SoCal Legacy team has been blessed with some incredible players throughout the past 8 years, including several who have received athletic scholarships to play collegiate soccer. We would like to welcome Ben Souza (#23) and Alex Tavarez (#33) as the two newest players to be officially added to the Legacy roster. Ben graduated... from high school in 2019 and, as a freshman, became the starting center back for a high level Division II college team in Northern California last year. Alex graduated from high school this year and has accepted an offer to play NAIA soccer with a four year college about 45 minutes north of Oceanside. Ben and Alex have joined a long list of phenomenal players who have taken their sport to the collegiate level, so they will continue to develop their skills and abilities both on the grass pitch and in the sand over the next four years.
