DAY Martin Luther King Jr was a Baptist pastor and American political activist who became the most prominent figure and leader of the civil rights movement in the United States, using peaceful methods and non-violent protests to get equal rights for African Americans. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 and murdered in 1968. Today we celebrate the life and legacy of this man who brought hope and healing to America. We commemorate as well the t...imeless values he taught us through his example - the values of courage, truth, justice, compassion, dignity, humility and service that so radiantly defined Dr. King’s character and empowered his leadership. On this holiday, we commemorate the universal, unconditional love, forgiveness and nonviolence that empowered his revolutionary spirit.
