Long disDance Love opens tomorrow, and in a program filled with Michael Smuin favorites, we are so excited to include a little something new! is a world premiere choreographed by Company Artist Cassidy Isaacson, performed by Lauren Pschirrer. When I was asked to choreograph for the Valentine’s Day program, I immediately knew what part of the audience I wanted to reach out and connect to: the people who have lost so much during this past year. I wanted them to know that... they’re not alone. So many people are going through a really hard time right now, and Valentine’s day is not fun when you’ve lost someone or you don’t have that special person with you anymore. I wanted show grief in a realistic way. Listening & learning, we are continuing to find ways to connect and contribute to organizations outside of our own by celebrating Black History Month here at Smuin Contemporary Ballet. Join us each week in February as we donate a percentage of our income from our online dance classes to different Black led non-profit organizations. We celebrate this month by amplifying Black voices within Smuin, therefore all organizations have been personally selected by Company Artists Bran...don Alexander & Ricardo Dyer. Do good while doing what you love, and learn a little something in the process! Black Girl Magik (February 8-13 2021): Through weaving spirituality and mental health, Black Girl Magik is building an entirely new approach to online wellness and education to help Black women grow in community. Returning to ancient Black healing modalities and traditions to nurture the well-being and existence of Black women, Company Artist Ricardo Dyer chose this organization because of its focus on Black women. We are so thrilled to donate to this beautiful cause. As an organization of creators, we stand in solidarity with all those who suffer senseless acts of racism in their everyday lives. To be silent is to be compliant. When we see injustices served upon a community that helps to make up our own, we need to take action. Today, in a show of unity with the black community, with those who are mourning the senseless murder of George Floyd, and for the many black lives lost, we take a break from talking about ourselves. Finding justice within our community begins with finding our own accountability. Here at Smuin Ballet we celebrate the members of our community who are facing racism everyday. As a company with a platform and a voice, we acknowledge that there is a problem, and we commit to being a part of the solution. #blacklivesmatter @ San Francisco, California
