Bikes have been a hot ticket item during the Covid pandemic. In early 2020, bike stores struggled to keep up with the demand. Bicycle sales reached $1 billion in April, an increase of 75 percent from the previous year, according to market research company NPD Group. Major U.S. cities even adjusted to the demand. They temporarily closed streets to give residents more room to travel and restaurants more curbside room while maintaining a social distance. In some cities like Seat...tle, it has led to a permanent move toward more bicycle-friendly streets. With more bikes on road along with more mopeds, scooters and motorcycles transportation experts say this moment appears prime for a transit upheaval. Watch the video above to find out which bikes are leading the surge, where cyclists are riding, and what this all could mean for the future of the U.S. transportation system.

Playing Politics with Safety: The White House arbitrarily blocked 3 cities from receiving FTA funding. Following instructions from the White House, the Federal Transit Administration disqualified transit agencies in New York City, Seattle, and Portlandlabeled "anarchist jurisdictions" by the Justice Departmentfrom participating in a new grant program to research methods to slow the spread of coronavirus on buses and trains. Transit agencies in these cities carry nearly half of national transit ridership. This action sets a dangerous precedent: if applied to other forms of federal funding, this guidance has the potential to thwart cities’ longterm recovery efforts. Tuesday, October 13th, SM City Council unanimously adopted the Bike Action Plan Amendment adding protected bike lanes. We were humbled and grateful for the youth that spoke so passionately and articulately at the online meeting despite the late hour in support of expanding protected bike lanes and safety for our community, workers, students and visitors. We’d like to thank staff for their meticulous work preparing and our city council for their continued direction and s...upport to expand healthy active transportation options along with infrastructure safety improvements for people walking, biking, scooting or driving a car. The Black Butterfly: The Harmful Politics of Race and Space in America a conversation with author Lawrence T. Brown. Host America Walks in a conversation with Lawrence T. Brown about his upcoming book The Black Butterfly: The Harmful Politics of Race and Space in America. In The Black Butterflya reference to ...the fact that Baltimore's majority-Black population spreads out on both sides of the coveted strip of real estate running down the center of the city like a butterfly's wingsLawrence T. Brown reveals that ongoing historical trauma caused by a combination of policies, practices, systems, and budgets is at the root of uprisings and crises in hypersegregated cities around the country. Drawing on social science research, policy analysis, and archival materials, Brown reveals the long history of racial segregation's impact on health, from toxic pollution to police brutality. In his book and this conversation, Lawrence T. Brown offers a clear five-step plan for activists, nonprofits, and public officials to achieve racial equity. Not content to simply describe and decry urban problems, Brown offers up a wide range of innovative solutions to help heal and restore redlined Black neighborhoods, including municipal reparations. He argues that, since urban apartheid was intentionally erected, it can be intentionally dismantled, The Black Butterfly demonstrates that America cannot reflect that Black lives matter until we see how Black neighborhoods matter. Following his presentation, he will answer questions from the moderator and the attendees.
