Toddlerhood is an exciting time full of discovery and significant milestones. A significant milestone that should occur a bit before your baby becomes a toddler is a visit to the dentist. Ideally, this should happen near the first birthday. If you have missed that time, be sure and make an appointment for your little one right away. A visit to our office is a great way to introduce good dental habits to your toddler. Our kid’s dentist and staff understand that a little fun a...nd a lot of patience can help a toddler relax and forget about any reservations they may hold. Aside from exams and cleaning of your little one’s baby teeth, we are available to help guide parents through some of the challenges of toddlers and proper dental care. One topic that we commonly address with parents of very young children is the habit of thumb sucking. Thumb or finger sucking is a common issue that has troubled generations of parents. Because sucking is a very natural form of self-comfort for babies, it is not something that should cause extreme distress to parents. However, as your baby becomes a toddler, thumb sucking can bring some undesired effects to your child’s dental health such as: Improper tooth growth Overbite Teeth growing towards the lips (buck teeth) Open bite Jaw growth abnormalities All these issues can lead to future oral health problems and a high probability of braces. For years parents heard various plans to eliminate thumb sucking, proposed by numerous schools of thought. Our office believes that positive reinforcement is the best way to help your toddler break the thumb sucking habit. Punishment and negative comments often have the opposite effect, and the child clings to the thumb sucking habit. It is, after all, a natural tendency seen as far back in a child’s life as the womb. Offer your toddler praise when they are not sucking their thumb and express how proud you are that they are a big boy or big girl now. For toddlers who do not respond to this, consider wrapping a small Band-Aid around the thumbs to help remind your little one not to suck. As with many things in your toddler world, thumb sucking will right itself, generally before age four. If you would like suggestions or tips from our staff about thumb sucking, contact our office.
