Each one includes onesies, hats, socks, quilts -- you name it -- that could help not just one family but multiple. The families in particular that will receive these babycare items are the ones that participate in the Bundle of Joy program. The program has been able to help thousands of families for ten years. When the pandemic started, there was a bit of a dry spell in terms of suppl...ies that were coming in. To make matters trickier, due to new COVID regulations, the program could only accept brand new items as donations. Fast forward to now -- we have packed 135 bags with supplies so far and will continue to work as fast as possible to distribute these amazing donations all of you have sent in. Everyone wants a healthy smile. Imagine if every time you smiled you felt stinging pain in your gums. What if that pain had serious consequences -- like oral cancer? The daughter of a county patient followed up with us and shared the story of how her father got his smile back. Last year, her father started to feel bad gum pain. His primary doctor had given him antibiotics. They decided to visit the drop-in dental clinic at San Mateo Medical Center and shortly after doing so... -- they were able to discover the root of the problem. Her father had been diagnosed with Invasive Squamous Cancer. Once they knew, she reached out to a university clinic and tried to arrange appointments. Unfortunately, lots of delays followed. A member of the Medical Center who was retiring had heard what was going on. While I was traumatized by my dad’s cancer news, I got a phone call from [the retiring DDS]. She said that the [university clinic] had made a mistake and she had taken care of it. If we ran into problems again she asked me to call her directly. This critical phone call made a big difference. Her father shortly after received radiation therapy and had a successful surgery. On his road to recovery, he still didn’t have any chewing teeth left. Progress was slow. Once more, the retiring DDS reached out. The call had comforted the daughter so much that she changed her father’s primary doctor to one at the county hospital. Within a couple of days, [the Medical Center] set up an appointment to see my dad. The week after, [they] started working on my dad’s dentures. [...] After 4 weeks, my dad got his dentures! He was very fortunate to have [the retiring DDS] & her team help him. We are so happy her father received the treatment he needed and can comfortably smile again. This is the result that we want every person who lives in San Mateo County to experience. Supporters like YOU make this kind of care happen. Many of you know a person affected by breast cancer. During Breast Cancer Awareness month, there are several ways you can support loved ones currently dealing with this disease or the future generations that will face it. Oftentimes it comes down to accurate screening and testing. The most immediate way to help the battle against this disease is to equip hospitals with early detection tools. A 2017 study by the scientific journal Cancer found that uninsured women were 2.6 t...imes more likely to be diagnosed with a late stage. Regardless of insurance status or income, everyone deserves access to early screening tools. For the past two weeks we’ve been able to deliver Bundle of Joy bags to Daly City Clinic, South San Francisco Clinic, and Coastside Clinic. This is in a word...AWESOME. For those who are unaware, Bundle of Joy is the name of the program that helps pregnant mothers in poverty receive the crucial prenatal care and supplies they need to welcome their littl...e one to the world: blankets, hats, onesies, diapers, wipes, etc. It is a program the Foundation has coordinated in conjunction with San Mateo Medical Center for the past 10 years and has benefited thousands of families. Right now, families who are living in poverty that are either on unemployment or waiting for it are in dire need of basic supplies for their newborns during the pandemic.
