Actually take a minute to read even if you never use one.

SLO OCEAN CURRENTS 31.12.2020

Working on this as we speak. First choice(January 29-31st). Day in the park and day on the boat guided or not. And a very special Advanced course maybe even a specialty or two.

SLO OCEAN CURRENTS 27.12.2020

Dive gear been hanging up for a while? Take it in to get serviced before your next dive and be sure thoroughly check your gear checks before you hit the water again. Have simple equipment checks saved your dives before? Tell us about it in the comments.

Three trips to Palau through the shop. We have taken quite a few people there to enjoy what it has to offer. Interesting read especially if you have been there. Who wants to go! https://www.washingtonpost.com//palau-coronavirus-vaccine/

SLO OCEAN CURRENTS 09.12.2020

Almost looks like Morro Bay. Its been a few years but we have seen hundreds of them before.

SLO OCEAN CURRENTS 07.12.2020

Look how blue that water is. The islands is where the diving is at. Always love the sea lion rookery at Santa Barbara Island. #scubadiving

SLO OCEAN CURRENTS 01.12.2020

Well if you didn't know many anglers are on a break from fishing rockfish for at least the next two months. As SCUBA and Freedivers we are allowed to still take rockfish year around. With that said most of the spearfishers I know do not take a full limit of fish but typically take just enough for a couple meals. With the new regulations for this year its best to be aware of the new changes as to not make a mistake. The prized Vermillion rock fish now has a limit of five fish. Take a read, be safe and conservative and enjoy our resources. https://nrm.dfg.ca.gov/FileHandler.ashx

Well my favorite activity is Sunset after a day of diving while getting ready for dinner to be served.

Here is a specific post towards the Enriched Air course. This link is good until January 1st and you save $50 dollars. Nitrox is usually $180 online and this includes your certification card. Until the January 1st the cost is $130 paid on the PADI site. When you are ready you call into the shop and pay $100 tuition and is good for a one on one session. You set the date and time. https://Shop.padi.com/product/enriched-air-diver Further questions can be answered here or by making a call 805-544-7227

SLO OCEAN CURRENTS 07.11.2020

Some good opportunities to take a course right now. You can do the practical anytime within a year. At the shop we do the nitrox one on one or form your own group. The Equipment course is a great buy, just one infield fix is worth the course alone. When looking for the courses scroll down until you find the specialties on sale. Pick a course or two and give us a call when you are ready to schedule you course. The last time PADI had an offer like this it lasted just a few weeks in the begginng of lockdowns.(March) Disclaimer- these are the online courses only not the shop/ instructor fees.

SLO OCEAN CURRENTS 31.10.2020

Pretty good advice when selecting a dive course and facility. Adhere to standards, don't cut corners, keeping staff up to date, and of course safety first. We have 6 instructors mostly part time and 3 active Divemasters. This year we had quite a few Divemaster lead guided dives by our competent staff. All along we didn't know we were an destination dive shop for travelers. Job well done by our staff. Be part of our team. Call us for a consultation. It won't cost you anything but time. 805 544 7227

Be that person who buys for a relative, friends or family. Give them the PADI online academic portion of certification. They can take a private course or join in with one of our groups. You can use this link https://Shop.padi.com/product/open-water-diver to sign them up but will need their email address or call into the shop and we can issue a gift code for the course as well. 805-544-7227 It's only $195 and it's easy shopping during Covid.

So good ideas and reminders here. A back plate and hp steel 100 can take up to 10 pounds off your weight system bringing a weight belt down to comfortable and potentially a safer system. Have you disconnected you inflator in the water since your open water course. Reminder to rinse your bcd inside and out and oh yeah it should also be serviced. We see 1bc to 5regulators turned in with regulator service.

Some of the best diving (Indo) we have done had some of the worst plastics in it. The world needs education. There so few of us who dive and see it first hand.

We have been out teaching SCUBA lessons at Morro Bay and this young man pulls up in his car at Coleman Beach. He gets out of his car and sets up his chair and skate. He then takes off ripping down the boardwalk. As the entire class is looking on with their jaws on the ground and smiles on their faces we take a moment to ponder what can be done. Especially by those who are strong minded. Well done Evan! With most news telling us what we can't do you have shown what you can do and brought a silver lining to many. https://fb.watch/1Zg2jVDi1d/

A little humor to start the weekend.

SLO OCEAN CURRENTS 28.01.2020

This week was a bit different as I attended the dive trade show DEMA virtually. It was nice to be able to start early and still have time to work the shop hours. Our hours will revert back to 12-5 M-Saturday as November has been on the slower side. The last few days have seen an uptick maybe that is due to everyone going back out to resupply. Remember you can always call and set an appointment from 10-noon or between 5 and 6. We are doing business as usual and lessons too. I am proud to say that many of the seminars I attended were related to health and safety and If I was to grade the staff and shop as a whole, we scored very well. Might even mess up the curve. 805-544-7227 [email protected]

No wonder we like boat diving. Although this seems to be too exaggerated to be true it's always a good idea to get some local knowledge about beach diving. Call a pro, book a guided dive or talk to an old timer. Beach diving can be rewarding when the conditions are right.

SLO OCEAN CURRENTS 05.11.2019

If you can't make it to the Channel Islands we have quite a few nudibranchs here in Morro Bay. Look us up for a guided dive or take the Naturalist dive which applies towards your Advanced card rating. You can take one dive at a time and pay for each as you go.

Have you ever heard of the term BOFFF? No? Well, let's dive into some science! BOFFF stands for big, old, fertile, female fish! These larger, more mature... fish (think trophy fish) tend to produce many more babies than smaller fish, and their babies also tend to survive better! Inside marine protected areas (MPAs), fish are able to grow to larger sizes and, therefore, increase their reproductive output, or the number of babies they have. This is just one of the ways MPAs benefit fisheries! For more information, check out this publication: https://academic.oup.com/icesjms/article/71/8/2171/748104 #CaliforniaMPAs #CalifMPAs #ProtectWhatYouLove #MPAscience #FishForever #YayMPA #CiteYourSources #MPAMonday

On a local note #morrobay had great #Visibility for #scubadiving and #snorkeling yesterday. Afternoon tides should be pretty good this week. Vis was 15 to 20 feet.

SLO OCEAN CURRENTS 22.03.2019

Well the weekend diving with #slooceancurrents was pretty successful whether you were grabbing lobster or just enjoying some great diving conditions. The back side of the islands were challanging on Sunday with a South swell but the front side was just fine with 40 to 60 feet of vis. Lots of happy divers to say the least. And for those who wanted a bug or two, there were some nice ones to be had. Next trip is Friday which is sold out and the October 31st and November 1st are already taking reservations.

This Saturday, October 3rd, marks the opening of recreational spiny lobster season in California! What’s the largest #SpinyLobster you’ve ever caught? Male Cali...fornia spiny lobster can reach three feet long, weigh more than 25 pounds, and live for 50 or more years! You can even catch CA spiny lobster in some of California’s marine protected areas (MPAs) including Crystal Cove, Dana Point, and Anacapa Island State Marine Conservation Areas (SMCAs). Make sure you check California Department of Fish and Wildlife regulations and don't forget your valid California fishing license and spiny lobster report card! Did you know a female California spiny lobster can carry up to 800,000 eggs! Need more lobster tales? Feast on these fun facts for #NationalLobsterDay. No butte...r required. Unlike their Maine counterparts, spiny lobsters don’t have claws. The decapod (ten legged) crustacean gets its name from the sharp spines along its upper shell and sides of the tail. The two long antennae are twice as long as its body. The largest California spiny lobster ever recorded weighed over 26 pounds! A juvenile may shed its shell (exoskeleton) 20 times in the first year. Spiny lobsters are scavengers, eating almost any decomposing material on the ocean floor in addition to sea urchins, clams, and worms. Their diet of kelp consuming sea urchins helps to maintain a healthy, balanced habitat for other species that rely on the kelp for food and shelter. Explore the underwater home of California spiny lobsters by watching Channel Islands National Park live dives at https://www.nps.gov/chis/planyourvisit/live-programs.htm.
