I'm teaching a seminar on the existential nature of Los Angeles and, of course, food is part of the tenuous ties that bind us here. While prepping for a Jonathan Gold interlude (Gustavo Arellano Miranda you're up next--Taco USA!), I looked up best JGold essays and was heartened to see Eater LA recently had this to say about his contribution to Slake nearly 10 years ago... You never know. Viva Jonathan Gold. You want to f*** it One could argue Jonathan Gold’s greatest single... piece of writing was not about a restaurant, or even a dish, but rather about a painting of fruit called Still Life with Lemons, Oranges and a Rose by Francisco du Zurbarán at the Norton Simon museum. The piece originally appeared in Slake Magazine, which is now defunct but available as back issues on Amazon. A few years ago Jonathan Gold did a live reading of his famous article during a Lucky Peach show in Downtown LA. KCRW has a podcast with a full recording of Gold’s reading starting at 10 minutes and 58 seconds. Click on the link here to listen to the late Gold read perhaps his finest piece of food writing ever. Warning, the final line has an explicit word. https://la.eater.com//jonathan-gold-non-review-articles-fa

Dean Kuipers has touched so many of our lives here in Los Angeles as a writer, editor, mentor and a friend. His new book, Deer Camp, places him alongside the likes of Rachel Carson, Edward Abbey, John McPhee, Timothy Egan and others who remind us of the unity of ecology and soul. Please join us to celebrate Deer Camp on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Chevy Larchmont. https://www.chevaliersbooks.com/dean-kuipers

So, this thing is turning up all over the place lately... New York City benches, Richmond, VA desktops, rocky Maine beaches... is it on your bookshelf yet? Thanks, Su, Ken, and Mike for the pics. It’s fun to follow this little book’s summer travels.

Not dead yet. If you're in the South Bay on August 4, or looking for a reason to be, the great Knocko Nolan will be hosting me and L.A. Man starting around 4 p.m. Hope to see you there! And... don't let the summer pass you by without getting this summer's #1 read, according someone.
