Today is Bryce & Ronnie Avalanche Safety Day, honoring two young skiers who were killed in an Avalanche in Sölden, Austria in 2015. Bryce Astle, a 19-year old from Salt Lake City, and Ronnie Berlack, then 20 and from Franconia, N.H., ventured off groomed ski trails with teammates from the U.S. Ski Team when races were canceled due to heavy snow. The group had unknowingly wandered into avalanche terrain and were swept away in a giant slide. "This was a group of very skilled s...kiers who simply did not know the danger, said Steve Berlack, father of Ronnie and chairman of BRASS Avalanche. They didn’t know that in Europe when you leave the groomed slopes of a ski resort you are off piste. Tonight, BRASS is hosting a free online screening of "Off Piste: Tragedy in the Alps" at 8 pm EST. Homewood Mountain Update! Homewood Mountain Resort’s team began the Ellis chairlift refurbished project over this summer. The two-phase project to modernize the 40-year-old chair will result in 90% of the chairlift being replaced upon completion. The first phase of the project saw the replacement of new tower assemblies; and to align with Homewood’s environmental stewardship efforts, lift tower footings and components being repurposed. Phase two will be completed in summer of 2021 and includes replacement of the drive terminal, haul rope and the addition of new chairs with restraint bars. Once complete, the revamped fixed-grip triple chair will decrease ride time by approximately 28% (nearly four minutes).

California's mountain resorts boast over 40k vertical feet of skiing terrain. That's the equivalent of Mt. Whitney, Mt. Shasta, and North Palisade - combined! Are your legs tired yet?
