The SJSU OT PTE club is participating in the Saint Catherine’s Challenge this year and we need your help! The Saint Catherine’s Challenge is a nationwide challenge organized by The American Occupational Therapy Foundation (AOTF). OT schools across the country compete to raise the most money for OT research (the SJSU PTE club WON the challenge last year!!). The funds go towards Intervention Research Grants to support OT practitioners exploring gaps within OT research, helping ...to strengthen our evidence-based practice and enhance quality of care for our clients. Our first Saint Catherine’s fundraising event for the year is an OT T-shirt! This is a great opportunity to advocate for the profession AND get a cool T-shirt! These shirts also make great holiday gifts. They are expected to arrive by December 23rd. All proceeds go directly to AOTF. The t-shirts are only offered for a LIMITED amount of time. December 3rd is the last day to purchase shirts so you want one, get it soon! Please help to support the SJSU MSOT program in this challenge and share our t-shirt link! You can also donate online now! https://commerce.cashnet.com/cashn/selfserve/storehome.aspx If you believe that San JoseState University and the Occupational Therapy Department contributed to, or were instrumental in your professional development, please help us now with a generous financial cont...ribution.If as a student you received a department scholarship, emergency fund grant or no-interest fieldwork loan - please consider how beneficial that was to your success at school - and give generously to help our current students. There is no more important time to give than now and there is no more important investment you could make to your profession than to support the school and program of which you can be proud. With your help we are able to support students and faculty to attend state and national conferences where they have consistently shared their research through presentations and posters. We have created donor categories and recognize donors on our website. Susan C. Robertson Occupational Therapy Professional Enhancement Endowment Susan Robertson credits SJSU’s Occupational Therapy program for her long successful career in Occupational Therapy. After graduating with her undergrad degree from Pitzer College in three years, she spent a year in Europe. While working at a hospital in Switzerland in the mental health area, she saw the power of occupational therapy and decided that’s what I want to do as my life’s work, which b...rought her to SJSU. I had great internships and good support from the SJSU instructors, Susan said. You can describe Susan as fearless. At the completion of her master’s degree and receiving her OT certification, she packed up and drove to Richmond, VA to teach at the Medical College of Virginia for three years. Then the American Occupational Therapy Association recruited her to provide professional education. She went back to teaching at Towson University for a couple of years before seeking a position next door to her house at the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center in the mental health area. She finished her PhD from University of Maryland and has contributed to clinical practice and research in a list longer than your arm. Her professional publications and presentations have targeted research outcomes, leadership development, and intervention to foster wellness. To give back to those who launched her career she created an endowed fund to provide professional development funds for faculty and students for research project expenses, conference attendance, or development and use of new teaching methods to move the OT professional forward. Not too long ago, she also completed her will and trust and named San Jose State University Occupational Therapy program as the beneficiary to create a named professorship. This transformational gift will have a profound effect on the program. Susan, we champion the research that you’re still doing at NIH to help the profession, and we champion your thoughtfulness to help move the OT program forward with this type of gift.

13 days left to apply for SJSU’s certificate and Applied Mindfulness! Through the cultivation of mindfulness as a practice and a way of being, we can encourage our minds and hearts to function more effectively for our benefit and that of our families, our work, our communities, and our world. One powerful element of SJSU’s Applied Mindfulness program is that it will be an intimate sense of engagement with a highly motivated global community. Exchanges between Melissa Sutor, M...egan Chang, myself, and certificate participants will enhance the experience of our interconnectedness and help us focus on real-life approaches to potentially maddening dilemmas, social contradictions, structural injustices, and real personal and family challenges. I hope you take advantage of this incredible opportunity to join a global community as we embark on this mindfulness/heartfulness journey. Please help us spread the word and share with your friends and colleagues and join us for our upcoming info session this Wednesday, June 24th at 4 PM PDT.
