CELEBRATING 100 YEARS OF SOROPTIMIST SERVICE (2021)An Historical Moment: The President’s Appeal was initiated by Soroptimist International in 1981, under the... presidency of Catherine Salt. Since then, each incoming SI President has selected a particular area of interest or concern to lend focus during her two year term of office. The intention of the appeal is to raise awareness about a variety of social and health issues facing women and girls and have included attention paid to trafficking, to land mines, to HIV Aids, as examples. In December of each year, clubs around the world are asked to join together to both focus their attention of the appeal’s concern and to raise some funds in its support. The President’s Appeal is the only program within SI where all four federations work together towards a common theme. As SI’s first President’s Appeal, Catherine Salt identified the need to support women and their children who were living as refugees from Vietnam on the island of Pulau Bidong, Malaysia. Pulau Bidong was the first asylum center run in co-operation with UN Refugee Agency that provided housing, care and maintenance, including medical and social services for refugees awaiting re-settlement.
