"This lovely folk tale enchanted me when I was a small boy in Afghanistan. I am grateful to Asma Salehi for re-telling it to a whole new generation and for salv...aging a small piece of Afghan culture." --Khaled Hosseini, Author of The Kite Runner Ten years ago Long River Press published "Buzaak Chinie (The Porcelain Goat)" a traditional Afghan folk tale by Asma Salehi. The story combines elements of folk allegory including not opening your door to strangers, and adds a touch of pathos unique to the situation of 20th Century Afghanistan. Its underlying message is: always listen to your mother! Salehi's beautiful color paintings are the highlight of the book. Buzaak Chinie is available in hardcover on Amazon. One of China's most beloved stories. This version is a literary adaptation by Zhang Xuejing and Liu Yousheng. The original tale probably dates from the period between the Eastern Jin Dynasty (317-420) and the Tang Dynasty (618-907). #read #chinabooks #Amazon

Long River Press published Penguins Can Fly in 2019. It’s a novel with a lot of nostalgia set in San Francisco so we just couldn’t resist the author’s love af...fair with the City. The original is in Chinese, and a China (domestic) edition has just been released by Shanghai Literature and Art Publishing. Hopefully we can do an English language edition at some point and we hope the international market will be strong again in the coming years (we do think our cover is better) See more

Perhaps greatest among all Chinese philosophers is Confucius, whose teachings have been passed down from teacher to pupil for thousands of years. The impact of ...Confucius on Chinese civilization is immense. Among some of the key concepts put forth or expounded by Confucius and which have had an impact on China’s entire civilization, are the concepts of Ren (benevolence or humaneness, which form the basis of the Confucian Golden Rule [i.e. Don’t do unto others what you don’t want others to do unto you]); Yi (devotion to what is both just and righteous); Li (devotion to rules and regulations, which is necessary for society to run smoothly); and Xiao (filial piety and adherence to family structure). Confucianism was almost wiped out in China. Later disciples of Confucian thought (including Mencius and Xun Zi) through their own writings and philosophical texts, helped Confucianism re-establish itself and set its course as the dominant philosophy in China. #Amazon See more

Sun Zi (544-496 BCE) Sun Zi, author of The Art of War, believed that the world was objective in existence; he also thought that the nature of conflict was in a ...state of constant change. He therefore emphasized extensive, even obsessive, planning so as to lead the direction of conflict in a way that was favorable. Because of this meticulous attention to detail in the realm of military affairs, Sun Zi is regarded as an important thinker in the same ideological circles as Confucius and Laozi. The Art of War itself contains a full text of only approximately 6,000 Chinese characters, yet it covers the entire range of strategy, tactics, planning and operations, terrain, training, discipline, intelligence gathering, as well as the relationship between military affairs, politics, economics, and diplomacy. From this relatively concise original text, an immense level of knowledge can be gleaned. #Amazon

Mo Zi (468-376 BCE) Master Mo, known in Chinese as Mo Zi, was born with the name Mo Di. According to various historical sources, he was born in the State of Lu ...or the State of Song. He is one of China’s most important philosophers of the Spring and Autumn Period who lived between the time of the death of Confucius and the birth of Meng Zi (Mencius). Epistemology is one of Mo Zi’s greatest contributions to Chinese philosophy. He classified knowledge into three categories: dissemination, reason, and practice. His thought system (known as Mohism), based on logic, is another contribution. Mohism expounded on the practice of debating and reasoning; Mo Zi held that debating could distinguish right and wrong, examine rules to attain stable government, reveal similarities and differences, judge benefits and harm, and make uncertainties clear. Mohism later evolved into a complete and precise system of logical theory, and remains one of the core texts in Chinese logic and reasoning. #Amazon
