Emotional intelligence starts with naming them. Letter recognition and writing skills with names of emotions is extra valuable . @brenebrown teaches that we Name it to Tame it, and taming our Littles for more cooperation has been key to 2020 survival! .... Bringing more complex emotional words into conversation for all ages, even youngest ones, is always beneficial, such as Disappointed or Frustrated or Lonely. We all need to normalize our complex range of emotions. Starting with shorter words helps our sanity though. Write the words yourself with a pen, then ask your child to trace your letters with any writing tool. You can talk about what the word means and how that word feels as they’re doing this . Having them draw something with the word is also beneficial, and fascinating! Can you see the sleepy eyes this student drew? . Put the finished results on the wall. When the next emotional storm hits, ask them to show you which feeling they’re having. Seriously parents, this is a brilliant and worthy idea to put in place. You’ll be as surprised as my other families to see the shift in the emotional winds with this! . Teaching them the Signs for emotions also helps because strong emotions tend to inhibit speaking and listening skills. Glowing with Pride ...and Self Confidence, Capable, Self Worth, Self Identity, Whole Body Communication...all in this last bite of this beautiful slice of family time, definitely see last video post for their family sing & sign! . This is when she found the Sign, (which is finding the hand shape) ASL Note: the Sign for PLAY is accurately done with two hands and this one hand is actually the Sign for YELLOW.... But....this is perfectly done by her, thank goodness her parents didn’t correct because the context always supports the meaning of Signs too! . Notice how she gives eye contact to mom and dad, rather then expect them to look at her. This is the biggest life benefit of Signing with all children, and adults, because verbal languages don’t require eye contact. Verbal languages, and especially American culture, has more multi tasking than present/focused communication habits. . We tend to acknowledge the disservice of too much screen time, but don’t notice the distracted verbal communication skills we model all the time. Every moment of eye contact is connecting, and collecting connected moments builds self worth, self identity and connection to their loved ones. . 6’s & 2’s...there’s more than basic math here!!! . I learned from a student about sleepy 6’s and how loopy 2’s are not a good idea because they don’t look as much like a 2, they kinda look like a different 6. . What you’re seeing here is my accomplishment of non-loopy 2’s, and awake 6’s.... . Interruptions from your students can teach you a lot! Not only the awareness of how to clarify what you’re teaching for them, but how they are seeing things. The creativity and conceptual reasoning she is using is impressive, do you agree?!??? . After I really heard, and practiced the 6’s & 2’s that she liked most, I started helping her forgive my sleepy 6’s and loopy 2’s when they happen. Because being flexible is a life skill, and to have the expectation that things will be exactly how you want them simply won’t go well. . Now we can smile when it’s loopy and thumbs up when it’s not to acknowledge what I know she notices, but the overall lesson isn’t interrupted, she isn’t distracted/stuck on it. . And best of all, she has another drop of her self identity settled in place. She learned the value of her voice and her thoughts. Sharing Treasures Have you realized the value of ‘Sharing Time’ for your kids? . Often, we think of this as extra stuff that happened during regular school. But designating special sharing time for each of your kids under your own roof can be so valuable. .... If you have a big-time-loves-to-share/story tell, this can save your sanity, your time and their creative self esteem! . Now you can respectfully give your full attention at a designated time to hear and see them. But, be sure to set a time limit. With an abundance of precious things to show and stories to share, they’ll need to prioritize and let some things go because there won’t be enough time. . If they get sad about that, that’s a huge learning thing too, wanting More is a life issue to learn to work with. . Your shy child is not excited to do this? Even more important to have. You can each have a Sharing time. Learning to accept the spotlight is important, expressing interests builds self esteem. Learning to manage all the feels that happen with expectant eye contact is a Huge life skill. M vs W About Letters.... It really is natural for kids to write reflections of letters in their early years. Instead of correcting it so often, focus on the intention of what they’re writing. The desire to communicate in verbal or written form is what needs to be built first. . It’s always okay to say I’m having trouble reading that word, can you tell me?. This points out that it isn’t clear but maintains your desire to know what they’re writing.... . Then take a focused time to reinforce their correct form. For M vs W, I focused on the words Mommy and Water and the letters M and W in Sign Language. I wrote the words with ballpoint pen, then she traced in color. . The Sign Language fingerspelled hand shapes enforce a letter concept with the sound, visual (both written English letter and ASL letter hand shape) and hand movement to form the ASL letter. List different M words while Signing ‘m’ and W words while Signing ‘w’. They’ll start associating the sounds with the hand shape movement and visual written English letter shapes. . While that often sounds like too much stuff for us adults, it actually taps into every learning style for every age. . The ASL handshapes to distinguish B’s from D’s is especially helpful as they’re the most common ones needed to differentiate! .
