When 2020 hands you lemons simply make sweet tea lemonade. The Universe sure does work in mysterious ways. @akpatrick1 posted about @ynpforever before Thanksgiving and we made a donation. Then today our GPS took us on a route leaving Bozeman, MT that wound us right they #yellowstonenationalpark. It was a breathtaking display of nature showing us her beauty. #bookstathankful for my favorite Aunt Bobbi @skyhawk9gu who gave me the @ruthwarewriter #TheWomaninCabin10 which sat in my stacks until early this year when I saw an ad for Ruth’s newest book #OneByOne and decided to read all 3 of her books in quick succession. They were fun and twisty and don’t stay in my head really now that it’s been a few months since reading them but I’m still grateful for the spark created by them to reignite my love of reading. I’m grateful to my h...usband @craig_fields who suggested I check out @jordys.book.club that he heard a bunch about from his @mrjesscagle podcast. I love Jordy’s book stack aesthetic and his fervent passion for books and staying on the right side of politics and racial and social injustices. Plus we’re both Michigan boys now living in Los Angeles who love books so that’s a fun similarity. He’s a great inspiration. I’m also grateful to Jordy since him being interviewed on @sarahsbookshelves podcast back in January 2020 led me to her podcast and becoming #bookstagram friends with Sarah. And y’all know her book podcast is my favorite and I’ve been listening to all of the back episodes and am a total #sarahsbookshelveslivepodcast supporter!! Happy November 1st and I’m going to blame the time change for the Instagram glitch that deleted my previous #BookedBySimplyTroy post about The Devil and the Dark Water by @stuturton. Here we go for a 2nd time! First, I’m grateful to the @mystery.book.club for selecting me to be a part of its October book choice. @jordys.book.club and @bostonbookfanatic pushed me out of my book reading comfort zone with this one and I couldn’t be happier that they did. I don’t know about y...’all but the 1600’s, the devil, lepers, and the high seas aren’t exactly screaming my name to dive in, but Arent I glad that I did? See what I did there? Arent Hayes is the lead character and I adore this sleuthing giant of a good man as our lead protagonist of the story. I was invested in his well-being from the start and I loved our strong female lead Sara fighting to find her way to her freedom in life. Together I loved all of the mystery they were fighting together to solve. Stuart Turton’s writing is sharp, immersive and sly and I am an unabashed fanboy of his work now. He needs to keep writing faster because I will be reading anything he puts out in the future and will be telling y’all about it. I loved how every end of each chapter propelled the story forward with a shocking final sentence. Many times it was a climatic sentence that made you want to turn the page faster. Chapter 12 was my big gasp out loud moment that made me feel giddy again that I found my way back to my love of reading during this pandemic. #iloveagoodsurprise It’s a long book of 464 pages and the middle slows a tad, but I didn’t mind and I was super invested in these characters and had to know more especially to the climatic ending that tied up everything in a way that put the biggest smirk on my face. Thank you to Jordan and Carrie for welcoming me into the #bookstagram world with such a bang I’m simply grateful and extend my thanks to @bookmarked for the ARC. This book looks stunning on your shelves too as you can see from its cover and the interior illustration is referenced thru the entire reading of the book and it made me smile each time I looked at it. Yellow makes me happy and the first time @simplytroy saw the beautiful lemon trees in my clients backyard doing the first walk thru for their wedding celebration party we threw back in February it sparked an inspiration. @brighteventrentals had these new gold (it’s actually golden yellow as you can see in the photos SCROLL ) Velvet Coco Luxe Accent Chairs that would pop with their super green lawn and lemon trees flanking the dining area. Our awesome bride @a...lucasia likes flowers but appreciates cool artistic structures even more (she can make awesome 3-D toys and comic art pieces - look closely at the tabletops and you’ll see the 3-D #princessmononoke figurines she created) so instead of the usual flower arrangements on the dining table look instead we turned to the always fab @shawnayamamoto who created these awesome chopstick sculptures with the candles and some florals to bring the wooden tables visual interest. Our couple, @robpardo + @alucasia had gotten married in Kyoto, Japan and appreciated the stunning nods to Japan. Seeing it all come together with the sun setting over the skyline and how the tablescapes danced with the lemon trees just took your breath away. Details. My 17 year old self read The Firm and A Time to Kill back in 1991 and started my love for @johngrisham and I wound up reading about 7 of his books until my reading habits and life shifted. Keeping it real with y’all when I am imploring you all to please shop at independent book stores to help save these small business my heart is all in. 12 years ago at the kickoff to our wedding weekend (our 12 year wedding anniversary is this Sunday 10/18/08) we had all of our guests come to @booksoup on the Sunset Strip for a Wine + Desserts Welcome Meet ‘n Greet to start the festivities. The owner Glenn Goldman had never allowed nor been asked for such an event t...o take place within the store after it had closed for the night, but he loved the passion we had for the store and books and allowed us to do it. I’m forever grateful he said YES the day I called the store and got him on the phone with the crazy idea. @booksoup was started in 1975 on the infamous Sunset Strip in West Hollywood and it was incredible to see our names up on the marquee for the night. Sadly, Glenn passed away from cancer a few months later, but that evening was beyond special and unforgettable to us. Our guests loved seeing how beautiful the store was and we had bookshelves of my favorite books and @craig_fields favorite books and our guests could buy books that night too. Another special exception they made for us. I couldn’t think of another better #tbt than this one today. Simply a blast to design an outdoor and socially-distanced safe Backyard Book Club Wine + Desserts party in honor of the then upcoming release of the fall’s hottest book Leave the World Behind by @rumaanalam. The color palette of the blue and greenish hues of the book cover inspired my overall design choices and I’m beyond grateful that @eccobooks sent @simplytroy and #BookedBySimplyTroy a few copies of the book before it was released. The back bar was turned into a sho...wcase for the book surrounded by desserts color-coordinated to the book cover and Book Worm gummy boxes for #BookClub guests. Plus, @thismessytablela created the most divine cheese and fruit display to keep guests noshing all during the club meeting. So many elements to inspire you to create for your own book club get together. I even took the back wall with champagne glasses and put single white roses in each glass to create a stunning backdrop for your guests to take photos with while reading their books. Happy Pub Day for The Devil and the Dark Water!! It’s my first one as an official #bookstagrammer #BookedBySimplyTroy. I’m ecstatic to tell you about this book I’m currently reading courtesy of the awesome @mystery.book.club @jordys.book.club @bostonbookfanatic selected me as one of October’s lucky readers to receive the book early from @bookmarked. I haven’t read The Mad Hatter of Crime (great moniker for him) @stuturton debut international bestseller The 7 1/2 Death...s of Evelyn Hardcastle (but I shall be doing that for sure after diving into this one.) His writing makes me sharper in intellect, gasp out loud at twists and feel a little chill up my spine as he gives me the creeps all while developing amazingly captivating characters and an exciting plot with a mystery to solve. Here’s a brief synopsis: Take Stephen King horror, a Sherlock Holmes-esque detective, and add a dash of ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ for an utterly unique murder mystery on the high seas. Samuel Pipps is the greatest detective of his day . . . but now he’s a prisoner, accused of an unknown crime by one of the world’s most powerful men. Along with his faithful sidekick, Arent Hayes, he’s sailing back to Amsterdam from the East Indies, where he’ll stand trial. But no sooner are they out to sea than devilry begins to blight the voyage. Still shackled in his cell, Pipps sends Hayes to solve a mystery that connects every passenger on board. Happy Saturday #BookedBySimplyTroy Friends!! I decided to kickoff my #bookstagram about two weeks ago with the fall season’s buzziest novel - Leave the World Behind by @rumaanalam debuting on October 6th. Initially, I was using its cover as my design inspiration for the Backyard Book Club I designed for @brighteventrentals virtual design showcase, but I didn’t realize how much I was going to find the author as fascinating as his 3rd novel. I love that he’s a fell...ow gay Dad, married to his photographer husband and raising 2 black sons in Brooklyn. We both have 7 year old adopted black sons and even though we haven’t met in real life, I feel a connection and can imagine some of the similar life experiences we’ve both inhabited in the adopted parenthood realm. It made me even more excited to be showcasing and highlighting his novel to all of you. There are a bunch of articles profiling him and his awesome family so take a Google and read more about him. @entertainmentweekly has a great one currently in their Fall Books section. His 3rd novel is still haunting me and I can’t wait for y’all to read it when it drops on Tuesday. Do yourself a favor and pre-order it this weekend. Last Sunday we cleared off the entire loving room bookcase and created a blank slate. Gathered up all the books scattered in various places of the house, the studio, the bedrooms and the garage and tackled a redesign. Definitely motivated by @thehomeedit show on @netflix but also a long term desire to get it done. I think they were the final kick in the pants to create it. So here’s the overall blank slate and the finished shot will be shown once we have a few final pieces in... place. Thanks to @craig_fields for saying we’re doing it and started immediately after seeing Clea & Joanna create their magic. 18 years ago tonight - @kellyclarkson became our very 1st #americanidol and will always be my favorite. I spent that first season watching, voting and talking about every episode each week with @kblern and @rshaneinky. It was a total blast and I actually got the box seats at the Kodak Theater for their final performance. We sat across from Simon, Paula and Randy as they judged. It was unforgettable and we all made custom airbrushed @americanidol t-shirts and a giant American ... flag with Kelly’s name on it. We were so spirited and into it that we even got interviewed by the @todayshow before that final performance at the then Kodak Theater in Hollywood. What a moment like this that we will always remember. We love you forever Kelly!! During this reset of our lives, I’ve learned that by changing my usual patterns of my life that I’ve been able to discover new companies, new websites, new books to read, new entertainment and businesses to follow. New to me but not necessarily new in life. It just wasn’t showing up in my feed. A lot of this happened during #blacklivesmatter which I’m beyond grateful for since I’m loving how my world got bigger. Forever a King to our son who at 5 years old sat in awe at the first screening of the 2018 opening day of @blackpanther at the @ipic theater in Pasadena watching the majestic @chadwickboseman bring to life a black superhero who looked like him up on the massive movie screen. We would see it 4 times in the movie theater, buy the costumes, action figures, books, anything Black Panther we could get our hands on. Finn doesn’t understand that the world lost @chadwickboseman yester...day, but the impact of what he created will last in our son’s heart forever. I was blessed to meet him in person and tell him thank you for what he created and how it mattered to my child. #chadwickboseman was a gentleman and an exceptional role model for children of all races around the world. Black Panther unites us all and Chadwick gave him life, dignity, strength, kindness and regal grace in his portrayal. I know that we will forever hold him in high esteem and will always cherish these photos from this pivotal moment in our lifetime. Rest in power and peace King.
