RESIDENTIAL COMPONENT REMOVED - DTLA developer Izek Shomof, owner of several downtown projects, purchased the Sears complex in 2013. Shomof envisioned a new Mail Order District that consisted of 1030 residential units, offices, restaurants, workspaces, and more. The plans also included the continuation of the Sears store. But after seven years, the project remains stalled. Jimmy Shomof, project manager at the Shomof Group, insists that his firm remains committed and is m...oving forward with redevelopment plans. However, the project no longer includes housing. The residential [plan has been] abandoned due to many issues. Shomof says that renovations at the Boyle Height Sears will commence in just a few weeks. We'll be painting the building and fixing all windows. The building will undergo a renovation inside and out and the plan is to occupy [the space] as the existing zoning approves, such as showrooms, light manufacturing, office/creative space and more. But as the retailer struggles and puts its longterm lease up for sale, Shomof says he has no comment [on the] current Sears' operation.
