SVCGS Students Place in Local Music Competition - https://mailchi.mp//greetings-and-news-from-the-silicon-va We are pleased to announce that two SVCGS Students, Charlie Zhou and Ethan Lin, have placed (1st and 3rd) in a local music competition, the United States International Music Competition. Charlie placed 1st in the Classical Guitar B division, and Ethan placed 3rd in the Classical Guitar A division.... Congratulations to Charlie and his teacher Patrick O'Connell, and to Ethan and his teacher Angelica Artelt.

Congratulations to Charlie Zhou for winning first prize in the 2020 SF Bay Classical Guitar Competition Youth Division II (ages 13 and under) where he performed a piece called Koyunbaba (Op. 19) by Carlo Domeniconi (b. 1947). Charlie has been a long time student of Patrick O’Connell, has won prizes in multiple competitions, is a charismatic performer of even the most difficult pieces, and we are all very proud of his achievements! Recently he performed as a soloist at the Suz...uki Guitar Graduation Concert where he played Bourée from Suite in E minor (BWV 996) by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) and Sound of Bells (Choro-Maxixe) by João Pernambuco (1883-1947). Charlie and his younger brother Franklin are members of our advanced ensemble and are both hardworking guitar players of a very high skill level. Thanks to @ClassicalGalaWest for hosting such a great event for young performers!

Reminder that SVCGS teacher Jon Mendle will be giving a recital tomorrow, (Friday 21st at 1pm) at SF State. Jon will be performing on two renaissance instruments - vihuela and 8-course lute, and a 19th century guitar!

#SVCGS Practice Tip of the Week: brought to you by Patrick O'Connell >>Sing a melody to find a more interesting and personal interpretation.<< ... Practice playing the melody of a piece you are working on all by itself on your guitar. While you play the melody learn how to sing it with good intonation. (I recommend singing solfège syllables). Sing the melody without your guitar until you like how it sounds, then play it again on your guitar.
