FABRIC STORIES OF OUR LIVES From November 7 - 30, Bonita Museum Art, History, & Cultural Center will exhibit the art installation, ‘Sine Kwento,’ curated by award-winning filmmakers Benito Bautista and Emma Francisco of San Diego Filipino Cinema. This unique exhibition explores the history of Philippine Cinema from its humble beginnings of artistic expression to what we know of modern Philippine cinema today. Silayan Filipina National Organization is proud to collabor...ate with SD Filipino Cinema in an interactive piece of the exhibit called ‘Tela Nobela,’ which means Fabric Stories. Tela Nobela looks at the contexts of Filipino clothing and fabric and its cultural meanings. Led by Mr. Bautista’s artful vision and creative design talent, Silayan Filipina took part in assembling a community of quilts. The quilt panels begin with a story from each individual clothing piece donated by the Filipino community. Silayan Filipina members graciously spent hours sewing the pieces of fabric together to create these beautiful tapestries, telling the fabric stories of our lives - Tela Nobela. Each quilt depicts the stories of the ambitions, hopes, dreams, and imaginations of Filipino immigrants and their families, as well as stories that depict major contributions made by our Filipino community here in San Diego. Silayan Filipina National Organization has selected San Diego Filipino Cinema as its 2020 beneficiary with a $1000 donation in support of Sine Kwento and the PQ Village project. Experience this amazing Tela Nobela at the Bonita Museum. The stories you will see and hear, are stories that will be passed down to generations - these are the fabric stories of our lives. What stories do you have or experiences would you like to leave as a legacy to your family? For more information on Sine Kwento: bonitahistoricalsociety.org #sandiegofilipinocinema #sinekwento

Happy Filipino American History Month! During the Manila-Acapulco Galleon Trade era from 1565 to 1815 Spanish galleons crossed the pacific between the Philippines and Mexico. On October 18, 1587, the Manila Galleon Nuestra Senora de Esperanza commanded by Pedro de Unamuno entered Morro Bay near here. A landing party was sent to shore which included Luzon Indios, marking the first landing of Filipinos in the continental United States. The landing party took official possession... of the area for Spain by putting up a cross made of branches. The group was attacked by native Indians two days later, and one of the Filipinos was killed. Unamuno and his crew gave up further exploration of this part of the coast. Historical Landmark Declared by the Filipino American National Historical Society California Central Coast Chapter Dedicated October 21, 1995
