THE FIRST SIKH SPIRITUAL MASTER Guru Nanak Nanak (of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, as he is referred to with reverence) remains my favorite of all prophets, messiahs, Gods, and gurus. He was a philosopher, a preacher, a poet, and a musician. His teachings strike a chord with me like no one else’s....Continue reading

ABOUT KARMA The life recommended by Guru Nanak is one of active participation in the divine plan (Hukam), through the cultivation of divine qualities and expression of right intent. Along the way, mistakes are inevitable, but "Grace" or "Nadar" is just as certainly available - given the right attitude and disposition. We enjoy a measure of free will to act but must submit to the outcome - over which we do not always have control. Life is about balancing between our actions ar...ising from free will and the Grace of the Creator. A clarification that is as timely as it is necessary is to make the distinction between the notion of Karma in Hindu thought and Guru Nanak's teachings. Traditional Vedic thought - both Hindu and Buddhist - posits a law of causality (karma), that is at once impersonal and inexorable (impossible to stop), allowing little or no room for divine intervention, indeed, it renders God unnecessary, as in Buddhism, or gives rise to a God of fear who tolerates no digression. In such a deterministic and causal world, the correct ritual takes precedence over the right action done with the right intent. Guru Nanak's God is not a God of fear but a God of love and grace. Ultimately, for Guru Nanak, self-realization is not dependent on our actions but rather on Grace. Sat Naam See more

HAUMAI From the Sanskrit "hum" and "mamma" denoting the experience of "I-ness" and "my-ness" respectively. Both mean "I". Translate equated to ego, although it has also been denoted as pride and sin. For Guru Nanak, it is the existential problem of mankind. Gurbani alludes to Haumai variously, as a chronic malady, a disease, filth, and a virus that infects the mind. It deludes the mind by distorting and fragmenting reality, giving rise to a sense of separate self (ego-self), where none really exists. Guru Nanak calls it "the veil of separation." Haumai lies at the root of all human suffering because it misleads the individual to make the ego-self the fulcrum of all activities. The purpose of human life is to become a sachiaar (bearer of Truth) by drawing the veil of haumai aside to enable the mind to see reality clearly. Sat Naam
