Proud of our Poetry Out Loud finalists from SAEL, for all their work and all their words. Donnelle, Bekah, Connie, Xavi, Georgina, and Ava, your performances are inspiring. Thank you to the Nevada County Arts Council, Coach Conrad Cecil, Ms. Beck, and all the families involved for supporting our students in choosing poems to recite and submitting them for this competition. And hot off the presses, Connie will be representing our whole County at the State level!!!! Congratulations to Donnelle and Georgina for also placing in the county-wide competition. Thank you to A Place to Call Home Project for partnering with us again to help our students learn through the Surviving and Thriving Expedition. We had a positive virtual kick off together this week to connect about folks experiencing homelessness in our community and to learn about compassionate action.

We are deeply saddened by the loss of our Crew member and want to make sure we're communicating and connecting with those that need support right now. Sam Schmidt, an 11th grade student at SAEL, passed away on Friday, October 30th. Our thoughts go out to Sam’s family and friends right now, and our staff is here to help students. Sam was a kind member of our school community, always there to help out someone in the Crew. Many students and staff shared about moments of his kind...ness and reflected on his great smile this morning as we came together as a school virtually. We continue to offer drop in support today and that link has been shared in Crews and over email from Ms. McLean. We will continue to offer support moving forward. There has been a GoFundMe set up to help support Sam’s family: https://www.gofundme.com/f/please-help-mother-and-family-of We encourage you to discuss your feelings and thoughts to help work through grief or concern. We are sharing signs of distress which may indicate a need for additional support and guidance. It’s normal and healthy to sometimes have feelings of frustration, changes in sleep patterns, anxiety, sadness, and mood swings. There are, however, signs that someone needs immediate intervention. Please reach out for help if you notice any of the following: --Hopelessness; feeling no sense of purpose in life or reason for living --Rage, anger, seeking revenge --Acting reckless or engaging in risky activities, seemingly without thinking --Feeling trappedlike there’s no way out --Increasing alcohol or drug use --Lack of interest in activities previously involved in --Withdrawing from friends, family, or society --Change in appetite or sleep patterns (too much or too little) --Anxiety, agitation --Talking or writing about death, suicide --Giving away prized/precious possessions --Prolonged or abrupt mood or behavior changes Please reach out to Ms. McLean at [email protected] for support or resources at SAEL. Additional mental health supports and resources can be found at: Nevada County Behavioral Health Crisis Line: (530) 265-5811 California Youth Crisis Line: (800) 843-5200 The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is 800-273-TALK (8255) Crisis Text Line: Text HOME to 741741

Due to the continued widespread power outages and the current red flag warning, we will not have school in any form for SAEL on Tuesday 10/27/20. We know there may be power coming back to some of us tomorrow at some point, but we have most of our students, families, and staff all without power right now. The SAEL building is also still without power. This makes it hard to plan calmly and appropriately. We don't want to add more stress and last minute changes to your lives. If your power comes on, you can engage in any extensions or missing work that was already posted on Google Classroom if that's helpful to you. If not, don't worry. We'll e-see you when we can e-see you.

Sierra Academy of Expeditionary Learning (SAEL) is a tuition free, project-based, public charter high school located in the NCE building in downtown Nevada City. Using the nationally recognized EL Education learning model, students take their learning deeper with hands on, interdisciplinary experiences in the classroom and in the field. With about 200 students in grades 9-12, the school is small and all students are known. In addition, the work our students do is relevant and... applies to the real world. All students are supported to be ready for college and career after they graduate and graduation requirements at SAEL meet UC / CSU standards. Students at SAEL have been accepted to colleges like UC Berkeley, UNR, Chico State, Oberlin, Lewis & Clark, University of Washington, Cal Poly, Sierra College, and Butte College to name a few so far. The application is online (www.sierraacademy.net) and the deadline is 4/30/21 for next year's 9th grade. Our virtual information sessions on Zoom will be from 6-7pm on 1/25/21, 2/24/21, 3/11/21, and 4/21/21. You can also reach out and connect directly with our Guidance Counselor, Kristina McLean ([email protected]). See more
