We believe education is the pathway to economically empowering women and girls. Every year, Soroptimist distributes more than $2.6 million in education grants to about 1,700 women all over the world. Over half of our Live Your Dream Awards recipients are survivors of domestic violence, trafficking or sexual assault. Nearly all of the women and families we serve have overcome enormous obstacles including poverty, teen pregnancy, and drug or alcohol addiction. Live Your Dream Awards recipients may use the cash award to offset any costs associated with their efforts to attain higher education, such as books, childcare, tuition and transportation. Soroptimist International of Arcata is now accepting applications through November 15, 2020 for a $1,000 scholarship. Apply at bit.ly/LYDA-apply or contact our club for more information.

Soroptimist International- an open letter: We stand in solidarity with people of colour and all who are equally outraged by these longstanding injustices. We are determined that there needs to be anti-racist action now and that we can no longer remain silent or try to invalidate or dismiss racism in any form. We must all take responsibility for our own actions. We must speak out and be proactive to end racism, indifference, and hatred and to ensure we leave no one behind.
For almost 100 years, Soroptimist has worked to create a better world for women and girls. Diversity and Fellowship is one of the core values that drives our wo...rk, and we model it in our membership, the women and girls we serve, and our hiring practices. It pains us to see racial injustice and violence of any kind. While we are living through confusing times right now, where consensus is often hard to find, we remain committed to working for a more just and equal world. We urge introspection and collaboration on ways we can work together to fix systems that do not serve all of us equally. We know that many of the women and girls we serve face inequality because of their race or ethnicity, as well as their gender. We will continue to do our part and contribute positively to our communities, nations and the world by helping women and girls to reach their full potential by getting the education they need to achieve economic empowerment. Right now, we urge calm, empathy and kindness. In the words of Abraham Lincoln, We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory will swell when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.
A message from incoming Governor Kris Chorbi - "Dream BIG for the future!"
