A YEAR LIKE NO OTHER - AND WE'RE STILL HERE January 5, 2021 Like small businesses everywhere, Mrs. Dalloway's was compelled to reinvent its business in 2020. It... was a year of ongoing adaptations to an ever-shifting landscape caused by Covid-19, wildfires--even a burst pipe in our ceiling. We lost staff, reduced hours, canceled events and school visits. We converted almost overnight to online sales (increasing by 15x the number of web orders, and twice the number of gift certificates), adding curbside pickup/sales and appointment shopping. We sought and obtained rent relief, and were awarded PPP loans and local grants. Our sales were down, but our customers remained loyal and supportive, for which we are extremely grateful. We also cut expenses and became more efficient as booksellers. Our staff pivoted remarkably as our sales shifted largely to web orders, and we made a conscious effort to maintain personal contact with customers, both in responding personally to every online order (and there were thousands) and by reaching out to our nearly 4000 newsletter subscribers and keeping our website current with weekly updates about new books as well as changing hours and policies. The result? We enter 2021 with a firmer grasp on how to make the most of our reimagined bookstore. There were other bright spots as well: Our children's department held several successful virtual launches of new children's books and started a weekly Storytime on Instagram Live TV. Thomas Lynch also went virtual with Truman Capote's A Christmas Memory, a fundraiser that yielded more than $700 for the store. Because of our commitment to local schools, we went ahead with our annual fundraiser in November, held entirely online, with 26 schools participating and a donation back to them totaling $4,700. We continued to provide books to schools and multiple Berkeley book clubs. While no one knows for certain what the future will hold, we look forward to vaccines, a new administration, and longer days ahead. For the moment we are all healthy and glad to be working. We are so appreciative of your willingness to adapt to and support our "new normal," and we thank you for continuing to shop local - both with us and with other locally owned neighborhood businesses.
