***September is National Preparedness Month*** Disasters Don’t Wait - Nobody knows this better than our Community. We just experienced the 2nd most devasting ...fire in California’s history and with COVID ever evolving, you never know what is around the corner. It’s more important now then ever before to plan for the unexpected to keep you and your family safe. As we move through September, we will dedicate each week to a way in which you can better prepare yourselves for some of the more common disasters such as fire, earthquakes and flooding. This week we will start with the basic - MAKING A PLAN Step 1: Discuss with your family and friends about putting a plan in place. Consider the following: 1. How will I receive emergency alerts and warnings? 2. What is my shelter plan? 3. What is my evacuation route? 4. What is my family/household communication plan? 5. Do I need to update my emergency preparedness kit? Step 2: What does your household need? Tailor your plans and supplies to your daily living needs and responsibilities. Create your own personal network for specific areas where you need assistance, or where someone else is involved. Keep in mind some of the following: Different ages of members within your household Responsibilities for assisting others Locations frequented Dietary needs Medical needs including prescriptions and equipment Disabilities or access and functional needs including devices and equipment Languages spoken Cultural and religious considerations Pets or service animals Households with school-aged children Step 3: Fill out a Family Emergency Plan Use the attached PDF to create your own plan or to use it as a guide in creating your own. Step 4: Practice your plan with your family/household As the saying goes, practice makes perfect! Quiz your kids every six months so. Conduct fire and emergency evacuation drills. Replace stored water every six months and stored food every six months. Test and recharge your fire extinguisher(s) according to manufacturer's instructions. Test your smoke detectors monthly and charge the batteries at least once a year. PUBLIC NOTICE: Those concerned about a social media report of three neglected horses and a pony in the area of Pleasants Valley Road and Vaca Valley Road last night; fear not, they are safe! In fact, prior to the social media post, Animal Control and our volunteer partners were already nursing the animals back to health, including three visits by a veterinarian over the prior two days providing I.V. fluids, food, and drinking water. This is also a great opportunity to discuss... proper reporting procedures for animal control concerns! If you see animals needing our attention, please call 707-784-4733. Social media is a wonderful tool for sharing information, but please don't let it replace the proper reporting of animal care or law enforcement concerns. When concerns are posted on social media, we can (and do!) end up with dozens of calls reporting the same incident. Please help us to help the animals that need it and keep the phone lines open for new reports by using the reporting line above.

Animal Control & Sheriff escorts are impacted, and we are coordinating with the county officials at the Emergency Operations Center to come up with a way to ensure all animals still inside the evacuation zone can be fed and watered.
