Bear Mountain hazardous fuels reduction/prescribed fire project continues January 6 The Shasta-Trinity National Forest will continue fuels reduction activities on the Bear Mountain hazardous fuels reduction project near Shasta Lake north of Jones Valley starting January 6, 2021. Fire crews will hand ignite these burn piles when conditions are favorable, completing up to 40 acres over the next several weeks. These projects are conducted in accordance with an approved burn pl...an to ensure the safety of people and property in the area. Burn plans describe the specific conditions under which burns will be conducted including the weather, number of personnel and opportunities to minimize smoke impacts. Actual project initiation dates will depend upon local weather and fuel conditions. Smoke will be visible from areas near Jones Valley and Silverthorne on the east side Shasta Lake. Residual smoke may be visible for several days and project managers will be working with the Air Quality Management Board to ensure compliance with air quality regulations and health and safety conditions. The main goals of these prescribed fire projects are to reduce the severity of future wildfires and to provide added protection for communities in the wildland urban interface. In addition, prescribed burns promote a diverse and more resilient forest and improve habitat for wildlife. Pre-ignition public notifications will be provided to local media outlets and will also be posted on https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/7268/, the Forest’s Facebook U.S. Forest Service - Shasta-Trinity National Forest and Twitter www.twitter.com/ShastaTrinityNF pages. For more information, please call the Shasta Lake District Office at (530) 440-4554 between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday (closed on federal holidays.) #GoodFire #ActiveForestManagement

"The mountains are calling and I must go." ~ John Muir Happy #InternationalMountainDay! The Trinity Alps are a magnificent mountain range in the northwestern portion of the #ShastaTrinityNF. Did you know that they are part of the second largest wilderness area in California? The Trinity Alps Wilderness nearly doubled in size by the 1984 California Wilderness Act. In that same year, it was added to the National Wilderness Preservation System. It currently has over 600 mil...es of trails and embraces over 500,000 acres of land. Chiseled granite peaks and alpine lakes dot the Trinity Alps Wilderness, with elevations from 2,000 feet in creek drainages to 9,000 feet at summits. This wilderness offers many different trails ranging from 1.5 miles to 15 miles at varying levels of difficulty. Management of the Wilderness is shared by the Shasta-Trinity National Forest, U.S. Forest Service - Klamath National Forest, U.S. Forest Service - Six Rivers National Forest and the Bureau of Land Management - California. Please practice Leave No Trace ethics while in the Trinity Alps Wilderness. #LeaveNoTrace describes how to dispose of waste properly, where to travel and camp and other ways to minimize your impact on the land and your impact to other hikers. Permits are required for overnight stays. Please help protect this special area for future generations. For more information, please visit: https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/stnf/recarea/?recid=6521

Trinity Post Fire Hazard Reduction prescribed fire project begins January 6 The Trinity River Management Unit is planning to conduct hand pile burning starting January 6, 2021 along County Road 402 to reduce hazard fuel build-up on National Forest System lands in the area of Denny, California. Fire crews will hand ignite these burn piles when conditions are favorable, completing up to 50 acres per week. The total project size is 299 acres and will take up to six weeks to co...mplete. Fire managers are working with North Coast Unified Air Quality Management District to ensure compliance with air quality regulations and health and safety conditions. The prescribed fire will create smoke that may be visible from many areas in Denny, Hawkins Bar and Burnt Ranch. Smoke production will begin around 10 a.m. each day and continue through late afternoon. Drivers should be alert for smoke and potential debris on the roadway. The goal of this project is to reduce live and dead standing vegetation and surface fuel accumulation caused from past wildfires to provide safer access and egress to the public and firefighters. Additionally, firefighters are creating areas where they can more effectively engage and suppress wildfires to help protect communities and the public. For more information, please call the Weaverville District Office at (530) 623-2121 between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday (closed on federal holidays.) #PrescribedFire #GoodFire #ActiveForestManagement

Happy #InternationalMountainDay! Mount Shasta at 14,179 feet is the highest peak on the #ShastaTrinityNF, second highest peak in the Cascades, and fifth highest in the state. It has an estimated volume of 85 cubic miles, which makes it the most voluminous volcano in the Cascade Range. It is connected to its satellite cone of Shastina, and dominates the landscape, rising nearly 10,000 feet above its surroundings. On a clear winter day, the mountain can be seen from the floo...r of the Central Valley over 100 miles to the south. This magnificent mountain has been a focal point of history, science, art, literature and mythology of the region. Long before settlers arrived, Mount Shasta was a important place in the lives and mythologies of Native Americans. Then in the early 1800's, it guided explorers, fur trappers, gold seekers and settlers traveling trails to California and Oregon. The mountain has attracted the attention of poets, authors and presidents. "...At last the water went down... Then the animal people came down from the top of Mount Shasta and made new homes for themselves. They scattered everywhere and became the ancestors of all the animal peoples of the earth." ~ Native American Flood Legend "When I first caught sight of it (Mount Shasta) over the braided folds of the Sacramento Valley, I was fifty miles away and afoot, alone and weary. Yet all my blood turned to wine, and I have not been weary since." ~ John Muir, 1874 "I consider the evening twilight on Mount Shasta one of the grandest sights I have ever witnessed." ~ Theodore Roosevelt, 1908 "As lone as God, and white as a winter moon, Mount Shasta starts up sudden and solitary from the heart of the great black forests of Northern California." ~ Joaquin Miller Please share your photos of Mt. Shasta below in the comments!

On the #AugustComplex, part of the logistical challenge of wildland firefighting is setting up operations in remote locations. Some of this wizardry is having a #MobileRetardantBase near the wildfire to minimize the distance helicopters have to fly to deliver the retardant to areas to where it is needed on the fire. #NEZone #NWZone #FireYear2020

The #AugustComplexFire began on August 16, 2020 after storms created hundreds of lightning strikes in the region. Six fires started from the lightning and grew. In just four days 35 fires were burning in the extremely dry forests of northern California. The fires roared through the crispy-dry brush and forests, eventually burning into one mega-fire, with more than 1 million acres burning across portions of Mendocino, Humboldt, Trinity, Tehama, Glenn, Lake and Colusa counties.... The giant fire burned on the Mendocino, Shasta Trinity and Six Rivers National Forests. As the fire consumed the landscape, 3,022 people were evacuated, one firefighter was tragically killed, and an estimated 353 homes and 528 structures were burned. The Great Basin National Incident Management Team #1, under the command of Incident Commander Evans Kuo, assumed management of the northwest zone of the fire working in partnership with three other Type 1 teams.

#AugustComplexNEZone and #AugustComplexNWZone Update for Oct. 24, 2020 The #AugustComplex is 1,032,497 acres, 93% contained Today humid ocean air will push inland, bringing with its cooler temperatures. Highs are expected to range from 55 in low lying areas to 70 degrees at higher elevations. Cloudy skies will raise the relative humidity and prevent radiant solar energy from reaching the fire. Winds will be mild, from the northwest at 5-mph with gusts to 12. These weather con...ditions will moderate fire behavior. The August Complex's western flank is fully contained, except for a section of line near the West Branch of Van Duzen River. Here crews have successfully held the fire within its current footprint and prevented additional growth. Expect containment Sunday, after which the west side of the fire will be fully contained from the south fork of the Trinity River to the Mendocino County line. The night shift continues to patrol and monitor the fire perimeter and taking suppression action if needed. Suppression repair is picking up throughout the fire, especially in the critical watershed areas along Ruth Lake. Crews are coordinating with resource advisors (READs) to implement the repair. Evacuations and Closures The Trinity County Sheriff's office and the Trinity County Office of Emergency Services (OES) lifted the Evacuation Warnings on all zones in Trinity County.
