Okay, but what happens if you see a shadow on the groundhog?? Did you know that the groundhog aka Woodchuck is properly called a marmot? Marmota monax is its sc...ientific name. Marmots, or members of the genus Marmota, are in the rodent family Sciuridae (squirrels). Marmots are basically very large ground squirrels. Those most often referred to as marmots tend to live in mountainous areas in the United States. The yellow-bellied marmot (Marmota flaviventris), also known as the rock chuck, can be found in the eastern-most part of Shasta and Siskiyou counties (Range map: https://nrm.dfg.ca.gov/FileHandler.ashx?DocumentID=2406) The official word is Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow this morning, meaning six more weeks of winter. Today marks the 135th #GroundhogDay ceremony in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.

Shasta-Trinity National Forest temporarily closed Due to historic and dangerous fire conditions and firefighting resources that are stretched to the limit, all... Shasta-Trinity National Forest land, roads and trails are now closed per Regional Order 20-10. The USDA Forest Service Pacific Southwest Region issued this order across the 18 national forests in the state to provide for public and firefighter safety. The order is currently in effect through September 14 and will be re-evaluated at that time. "These temporary closures are necessary to protect the public and to allow our limited firefighting staff to focus on the mission of safely suppressing existing fires, while also being available to respond to new starts, said Forest Supervisor Scott Russell. We sympathize with the people and businesses who are impacted by this temporary closure. It will be in place until September 15 or as soon as conditions improve and we are confident that National Forest visitors can recreate safely. Current fires burning on the Shasta-Trinity NF include the Red Salmon Complex, Hobo, Elkhorn and Hopkins Fires. The Elkhorn and Hopkins Fires have merged, and together with the Willow and Vinegar Fires further south will be managed under the August Complex. An evacuation order is in place for the community of Denny. An evacuation warning is in place for the communities of Forest Glen and Post Mountain. For current information about these fires including maps, closure areas and public fire information phone numbers please visit InciWeb at https://inciweb.nwcg.gov. Marinas and other resorts located on the forest and operating under special use permit from the Forest Service are closed. Customers with reservations will be notified by each individual business. Notifications to those who reserved Federal recreation sites through recreation.gov will be made as soon as possible and refunds will be processed. The Forest Service thanks our partners and the public for their cooperation and understanding of this monumental fire threat. It is critical that all forest visitors follow these important closures and restrictions for their own safety and the safety of our firefighters. Update 9/9: For the safety of the public and firefighters, the USDA Forest Service has updated the current temporary Forest Closure Order to include all 18 Nati...onal Forests due to unprecedented fire conditions. In addition, campfires and stoves are prohibited within the Shasta-Trinity National Forest, including Wilderness Areas, per Regional Order 20-06 (fire restrictions). The USDA Forest Service Pacific Southwest Region issued these orders to provide for public safety and reduce the potential for human-caused fire starts. Current fires burning on the Shasta-Trinity NF include the Red Salmon Complex, Hobo, Elkhorn, and Hopkins Fires. For current information about these fires, including maps, closure areas and public fire information phone numbers, please visit InciWeb at https://inciweb.nwcg.gov.
