October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month At Share Our Selves we provide care and assistance to domestic violence survivors and their children. We work with them to ensure they are connected to resources for a life that is safe, healthy, and thriving. Did you know... 57% of all homeless women reporting domestic violence as the immediate cause of their homelessness 80% of mothers and children experiencing homelessness that had previously experienced domestic violence. Housing insecurity and domestic violence are fundamentally linked neither can be solved without addressing the other. Housing insecurity is a primary reason why survivors across genders and age ranges stay in abusive relationships and why children continue to be exposed to domestic violencea key risk factor for future perpetration and chronic health conditions. Unstable housing and homelessness make survivors and children vulnerable to new forms of violence, creating a still greater risk that the cycle of violence will continue into new generations. For today's #ThrowbackThursday, we're getting closer to home. Specifically, our current headquarters! After our eviction in 1989, a community of support rallied to our aid. With a $200,000 matching challenge grant from Peter Ochs of the Fieldstone Foundation and Harold Ahmanson of the Fieldstead Foundation, alongside significant donations from John Michler and others, SOS was able to raise the funds necessary to open escrow on our current location. From the street, many of you might recognize our current residence when it used to be occupied by Garf's Sports Lounge, which is now located off Bristol in Costa Mesa. Celebrate your SOS memories with us and be sure to tag Share Our Selves! #50YearsOfSOS #WeCanRestoreOC

It's time for another #ThrowbackThursday as we continue to celebrate 50 years of SOS. A little over 30 years ago, Share Our Selves went through a location transition as SOS was evicted from our previous site. In battling a growing local NIMBY mentality, supporters of SOS began hosting various demonstrations that resulted in widespread press across Southern California. 1,000 people attended a 'Rally in the Park' event, hundreds marched on Costa Mesa City Hall, and a 60 hour fast/vigil was orchestrated to bring attention to what was occurring. The result, supporters contributed to the purchase of 1550 Superior Avenue, where SOS resides to this day. But more on that next week! Remember, if you have memories and photos of SOS in your life, please share them and tag us on social media! #50YearsOfSOS #WeCanRestoreOC
